Part 129- Sold
I had Jun check my wrist once we got back to Jia's building. Jia then cursed as Aoki told him what had happened. Jia then looked at me as he said,
"They followed you anyway?"
"I would have lost them if not for the fact that this subway completely empty."
"Okay it was empty, that's good. No witnesses."
"Let's hope so." I said.
Jun then said,
"He twisted your wrist but nothings broken or snapped out of place. It's just a little sore. You'll be fine in a few hours."
I nodded as I continued cradling my wrist as Jia said,
"Okay...we now know not to think cops don't know us. These cops know us. But how?"
"They knew of my tattoo."
Jia looked at me as he said,
"Everyone knows of these tattoos. It's the 36 Moons trademark."
"They give us away when people don't know our faces." Said Jun.
I nodded as I said,
"So they would know us from these then?"
"Probably. But the thing is, that only underworld people knew of these. For cops to know there would have to be files, details in each that someone paid attention to. But there isn't any because we destroyed all those before Aya got out of the Diet." Said Jia.
I nodded as I said,
"But how would they know of me?"
"That's what I want to know. Your name is being great but your face isn't following. It starts like that for all of us."
Tai then came in as he said,
"Something is going on."
We looked over at him as Jia got up from his desk and said,
"We know about the cops."
"It's more then cops Jia."
"What is it?"
"They know of Joryu."
"How?"
"I'm still trying to find out for myself but they know of him."
"It's why they bothered him tonight." Said Aoki.
Jia smoothed back the few stray strands of his hair that managed to fall forward as he said,
"So now they know some of us." Jia sat back down as he sighed.
Jun then put his hands in his pockets as he said,
"So what should we do Jia?"
"Let everyone know. And I wanna find out how they tied Jo to us."
Tai and Jun nodded as I then excused myself and left with them.
We had to work and find out how the cops found out about me. Gabriel advised me they might call me in now since they knew of my previous arrest.
"You'll be asked where you work now, what you were doing the night the two cops were killed, what your full name is and show ID. You'll also need to provide proof of where you work and how long you been working there."
"Where am I suppost to get all this?"
Gabriel stopped as he opened the folder he was carrying as he said,
"Your ID, false address, false last name because when I bailed you out of jail I gave you a different last name instead of Aoki's so they wouldn't know the relation. Your work papers working for Jia's alias in a dummy business that doesn't exists. You've been there for five years and you got the job because of good parental connections. The night you were arrested you were involved because Miya was your best friend. The gun in question, which you obviously don't have, was not yours, but your fingerprints were on it because you tried to fight the shooter and get it out of his hands, you don't even know how to use a gun."
I nodded as he gave me the things I needed. He then said
"In case they ask something you don't know or aren't sure of, tell them you won't answer anything that isn't required without your lawyer present."
I nodded as I folded the paper he gave me and put the ID in my wallet. He then started walking again as he said,
"Keep the ID. In fact make others and carry them at different times in case anything like this should happen again. Get New York ones, California ones, Hong Kong ones, all with different names, ages, addresses and such for whatever the reason."
I nodded again as he said,
"When they call you in, which I'm now more sure then ever they will, remember, be calm, collected, do not go armed in anyway so leave your .38 and the butterfly blade somewhere. Also button your cuffs at the end of the sleeves so they can't see the tattoo."
"When you think they'll call me in?"
"Not until tomorrow at the latest."
Like clockwork, they called me in. I wasn't nervous, but paranoid at what they would ask. I kept my ear piece over my shoulder, my cell phone in my inner coat pocket with my cigarettes as I waited outside the police station office. I even tied my hair back in a lower tail to seem more grown though I wasn't sure how old they would take me for. After twenty minutes of waiting, they finally called me inside. I met Watashi face to face, the middle aged man that was working on Kemuri's pay roll. He was in good shape, his hair still black, glasses resting on his desk. I could tell he was old by the fading marks around his eyes and mouth and the disgusting plain gray suit he wore. He also smelled of cheap cologne. Before I was able to sat down, they had me remove my coat as they searched it and then patted me down, just in case. I then was given back my coat and sat down after I put it back on and buttoned the front.
"Kuuson Joryu."
I nodded.
"Twenty-four years old, living in Ueno District correct?"
"Hai."
"So...where are you working now?"
"For Sung Xia Shu. In the Roppongi District."
"Owner of the restaurant chain. Interesting. And how long you been working there?"
"Almost five years."
"What do you do there?"
"Manager of one of the restaurants."
"How did a young man like you get such a job?"
"Good parental connections."
He nodded as he said,
"Tell me about the night you were arrested."
"Nothing to tell."
"You were charged for carrying an unlicensed weapon, being at the scene of an almost fatal shooting and for assaulting a police officer."
"I know."
"So why were you there?"
"My best friend at the time lived there. We were talking and he was walking me out when some madman came out of nowhere and shot at him."
"Anyone he knew?"
"I doubt it."
"So what did you do after he shot your friend?"
"I went after him. Tried to fight him. He dropped the gun and I guess he was scared the scandal might cause more attention to be drawn so he left without it."
"It was a rather expensive weapon for a madman to be carrying around."
"What a madman carries is none of my business."
"And you were not injured?"
"Other then a few bruises no, not really."
He nodded as he flipped through the pages in the file as he said,
"What about last night?"
"What about it?"
"Where were you when two police officers where killed at the subway near the business district of Roppongi?"
"Home. In Ueno."
"Hm. Interesting."
"Not really."
He nodded as he then said,
"Okay. That about covers it."
I nodded and was about to get up when I heard him saying,
"Just one more thing..."
I looked at him as he said,
"Have you heard of the yakuza syndicate called the 36 Moons?"
"Just a couple of rumors and such."
"Like what?"
"Like...they own Japan and stuff. Nothing much."
He nodded again as he then said,
"So, you wouldn't know anything about that syndicate would you?"
"Why would I?"
"Oh for the simple fact that you have been tied to the 36 Moons."
I scoffed as I said,
"I'm a restaurant manager. I don't anything about yakuza. I can't even hold a gun."
He then said,
"Oh see then maybe we mistook you for this guy..."
He took a picture out of the folder and flipped it towards me as he slid it across the desk and I looked at it. It was me, walking with Aoki. I shrugged as I said,
"So? What of it? It's me walking."
"On the same night as this was happening."
He took out more pictures as he showed them to me. Me in the subway, fighting with the two cops, me struggling, me shoving one of them in, a somewhat blurry shot of Aoki pulling me back as he shoved the second cop into the path of the oncoming train. Me, raising my then hurt wrist up to my face with a slightly visible shot of the tattoo on my wrist. I looked up at Watashi as I said,
"So?"
"So...I think you should call your lawyer."
A few other cops came in as I stood up and the escorted me to another part of the station. I called Gabriel on my cell phone as I told him what happened. He said he would be down there soon as I was then made to wait. Watashi was having a field day on me, glad he caught one of us but he couldn't prove it just yet. I knew he couldn't. And Gabriel would show him he couldn't. When Gabriel did show up, he was suited up, his hair hidden by a black loose cap as he started to argue with Watashi.
"You can't keep him here for no reason.
"We have reason to suspect him of killing two police officers last night."
"What proof?"
"We have photographic evidence as well as other things."
"Other things?"
"Someone pointed him out to be a member of the 36 Moons."
"You can't prove that and you know it. He has that previous record yes, but that doesn't mean he is a yakuza. As for this pictures you speak of, I wish to see them."
Watashi had them brought to Gabriel as Gabriel then took out a pair of glasses and put them on as he said,
"This could be anyone. The pictures are blurry, you can't even see this person's face. Why are you so quick to pin it on my client?"
"You can tell it's him?"
"How?"
"Look at his hair!"
"My client was home in Ueno the other night! He has the alibi."
"Really? And who would that be?"
"Jikanno Hisoka. He and my client were having drinks at my clients home."
Watashi stayed silent as he said,
"I'll have to bring him in for questioning."
"Do that. For now, release my client into my custody."
"Very well."
He let me go as Watashi then said,
"You'll be called in again so I wouldn't leave town anytime soon Kuuson."
I looked away as I left with Gabriel.
We both got in the car that Aoki was driving as I sat in the back, Gabriel in the passenger side as he turned to me and pulled off his cap as he said,
"Someone sold you out."
"But why just me?" I asked as I pulled my hair loose and began to gather it up higher.
"I'm not sure. Everyone else may be too scared to set one of us up. Then again, money and the right promises can override fear."
Aoki started to drive as I then snapped the elastic band in place and then took out a cigarette from my coat as I said,
"So what now?"
"Now, we have to talk to Hisoka and have him tell the same story I told you."
"Hisoka lives in Ueno?"
"Yeah. So he should be able to cover you. Besides, him not being a top head gives us the advantage. Also he has no criminal record at all."
I nodded as Aoki then took us back to Jia's building. I rubbed my still hurt wrist once we got there. I got out and went to Jia's office with Gabriel as Gabriel told him what happened.
"Someone sold Jo out and if they can sell him out, there's not much a chance the rest of us would be spared."
"How'd they tie him to us?"
"Someone took pictures of Jo the other night when the two cops confronted him. It might have been a set up gone wrong."
"I'm starting to think that too. So Watashi has something on Jo so far."
Jia leaned back as he said,
"Not many people know all of us."
"A picture would be more then enough Jia."
I tucked my hair behind my ears as I said,
"I haven't been photographed so my face could be seen. I'm sure if some tried, I would have noticed."
Gabriel then thought for a moment as he said,
"I should check to make sure the rest of us aren't being tracked as well. I need to call Hisoka too."
Jia then nodded and dismissed him as I said,
"Jia...they can't pin me as a yakuza can they?"
"I doubt it. The most they can do is pin as a yakuza, but not one for the 36 Moons. And even as a yakuza, as long as you have no other crimes, there's not much they can do."
I nodded as he said,
"Your wrist okay?"
"Yeah it's just been feeling weird since that guy twisted my skin."
"Well Jun saw it, he said it was fine."
"I know it's just feeling weird."
He then nodded and let me leave as I went back downstairs. I saw Gabriel and Hisoka speaking as Hisoka then nodded and saw me. He waved to me as Toki then came in from outside as he exhaled smoke from his mouth. He carried a cup of coffee in his hand as Gabriel then said,
"Hey Toki."
"Hey. You got my glasses?"
"Yeah, here."
He took out the same glasses he wore at the police station as he handed them back to Toki as Toki yawned, bringing his hand up to his cigarette as he moved it back and said,
"They nailed you huh Jo."
"For the most part. Someone sold me out."
"Gotta find out who. Last time this happened, it turned out to be some junkie. It's why Li's got a strict no drug policy."
I nodded as I said,
"So, how can we find out? Doesn't the 36 Moons employ over a hundreds of yakuza?"
"True, but not all of them are privileged enough to know the top heads, let alone their names and faces." Said Gabriel.
"Thas only a couple of them. Some that hang out and work in this buildin." Said Toki.
"Tai is more then likely already looking into it." Said Gabriel.
I sat down on one of the sofas as I continued rubbing my wrist and Toki said he was going to see Jia and Gabriel went to find Tai to find out what he was doing so he wouldn't repeat the same things.
Hisoka eventually went in to be my alibi and he repeated the same thing Gabriel said. Watashi couldn't do anything else but watch me and every action I did. I was more paranoid now, worried that the slightest thing could tip these people off. I tried not to go see Jia in the day if it could be helped and I called in the evening as I drove and there or took a cab and made sure I wasn't being followed. My life was getting so paranoid and what made it worse was that I still had no clue as to who had sold me out to these fucking cops. I got to Jia's building one night as I took off the hat I had started wearing to hide my hair. I didn't want to cut it, which would have been the more logical thing to do, but it was my hair and I couldn't do it. I got inside the lobby and began going towards the elevator as I paused to light a cigarette. As I pressed the button to call the elevator down, I smoked, looking around seeing it was really quite. Once the elevator came down, the doors opened as Tai stood there a file in his hands, his coat on as if he was about to leave.
"Oh good, I don't have to look for you. Get in."
I went as I said,
"What happened?"
"We found the guy."
"Anyone I know?"
"I doubt it. This guy has only been working for Jia for about three years or so. He sold you out for money. Kemuri himself had promised him the money and his freedom if he sold one of us out. He had planned to do the same with the rest of us since Kemuri had paid him."
"So where is he now?"
"Being taken cared of by Aoki and Toki in the basement. They're pulling information out of him by all means."
"Oh..."
I remembered last time those two got information from someone. I shook it off as I said,
"Oh..so what now?"
"Now, Jia takes a meeting with Kemuri."
