| An archmage will often spend most of his or her life searching the world over for obscure manuscripts, tomes and scrolls. It is only as death looms closer that the fear of losing one's life becomes a real threat. This elite group of individuals, able to harness the raw power of magic - shape it, control it, and direct it as they will, still must submit to the final verdict.. Death comes for us all eventually. It was because of this final losing battle with nature itself that a small group of Thera's most powerful mages decided to cheat the hand of death and develop a way to exist eternally without the needs |

| of the flesh. What they discovered was a dark road that leads to a state of unlife called lichdom. A lich is an archmage who has decided to forsake the laws of life, which they see as the chains and shackes that drag them to that last final death and willingly embrace Entropy to become a horrifying creature that can exist without food, water, breath or pulse. But this transition is not without its own perils. Ninety-nine percent of all the archmages that have undergone the process required to achieve a state of unlife die in agony. And still, most who survive the transformation are driven mad within the first few years because they cannot let go of the bonds that held them during life. The few 'lucky' individuals that both survive the transformation and maintain their sanity soon discover that the price they paid was too high. The one or two cases of a lich who has been completely successful are soon twisted by the taint of evil that they embraced to achieve their current state and are forever damned to exist as a creature of pure evil. The powers of a lich have been recorded by those who have either witnessed the transformation firsthand and lived to tell about it or by the very beings themselves as they recorded the after effects for study and contemplation. A lich is one of the greatest forms of undead. The remains of their mortal form have been rendered immune to the effects of negative energy, which was the chief component in their creation. They are also unaffected by any form of cold climate or attack, as they no longer possess the ability to feel such sensations. A lich is also immune to the lightning, however the true reason behind this immunity is not known. The ability to detect magical auras and enchantments as well as the ability to shroud themselves in an aura of protection against the very evil that they have become is also a documented trait. It should be mentioned that despite all of these advantages a lich is still able to be hurt and possibly destroyed by an item that is considered a holy weapon or artifact, and acid has been proven to permanently damage the corpselike form. Pray that you never encounter such a creature, for it is unlikely that you would survive long enough to tell the tale. |
