As I sit here in the early morning dawn, with the mist and dew still heavy on the horizon, the sun barely peaking out, I try to plan a way to start this, I gaze outside at the yard you loved so dearly, Kuno nudging at my knee, watching the birds fly by, and looking unto the black walnut tree. I ponder the idea if people take the time to see the hues of green. You, my mother, you took the time to see the hues of green, and I was lucky enough to stand beside you and learn also to see and observe what really is the meaning of life. This is your legacy to me.
Where does one start, when talking about the life of a person, January 31, 1927, Elizabeth Louise Schmidt, born at St. Johns Hospital, at 6:11 AM, mother Hermione  M. Hansen, age 16, father Edward C. Schmidt, age 24, residence 945 Euclid St. Is this the beginning?
                          To Betty
                               A Ruby, A Pearl or a
                               Diamond so rare
                               The Stars
                               Sun and Moon
                               Could never compare
                               With you my dear Betty
                               For you are so fair
And your heart is pure Gold
Like the gold of your hair
                               That youll never change dear
Is my constant prayer.                  Mother (Hermione M. Schmidt
Betty was the eldest daughter of Hermione and Edward Schmidt, the granddaughter of August and Lydia Hansen, niece of  Lyman  and Wilbert Hanson, oldest sister to Eleanor, LaDonna, and Hermione, wife to Charles Cook Townsend, and Charles Fredrick Olson, mother to Michel, Roxanne, and Elizabeth (Dolly), grandmother to Paul, Chris, Lew, Ed, Becky Lou, Katherine Elizabeth, Rocky Charles, great grandmother to Sydnia, Theodore August, Tyler, Christia, Noel, Joshua, Cheyanne. Is this the beginning?
Betty was long time employee and cherished friend to The Thatchers, personal friend to Mary Carpender, the Nygills, Ruth Anne.  Is this the beginning?
You, Betty Schmidt was a simply, but extremely complex person, you were raised during the depression, because of this you were very conservative. You may never have graduated high school, attended a technical college, but your diploma of life, and has no comparison. Everyday was an education for you; you learned about diabetic out of necessity. You learned about dogs and there needs, training, grooming, and breeding. Along the way you raised a few champions and created a name LILABETS.  You published and printed a news paper for The German Shepherd Dog Club. You investigated and wrote articles, drew the illustrations and figured out how to print set.
Do to my dear friend and loving companion Duncan, you taught yourself and created a dog grooming business for yourself.  This sends me off and wandering through names of the past, Lightning, Tarzan, Swinger, DollyO, Eddy, Goldie, Elly, Fortune, MR COOL, Kuno. These were all your friends, your dogs you held so dear.
You worked at both the Thatchers Chiropractic Clinic and Mrs. Thatchers home for more years, than I can even remember. You were more than an employee to them. When you retired, your daughters gave you a new love of your life, your dear friend Buddy, your cockatiel bird. Who gave you numerous hours of pleasure talking and whistling to him.
You loved your yard, and the hours you worked in it, to sit on the back steps and look out into the orchard and watch the birds was the greatest thing in the world to you. In the coldest of winters  you always made sure there was plenty of food for the birds to eat.
When you could no longer take care of your yard, your daughters were right there to help you, to mow,  to trim, to make sure you needed nothing more than to look out into your orchard with pride.  Betty Schmidt, I will lay your ashes to rest, in the orchard you loved so dearly , and with Gods help,  hold this orchard as a living memorial  to you and your mother and your sisters, LaDonna, and Eleanor, who have paved the path in  Heaven for you.
