Sleeping Beauty
by Emmuzka
He waited
he counted
the days to see your mothers eyes
and you would smile for me
every day was a year to him
He just stared at it. It rose slowly up and down as Relena
breathed in her sleep. A beautiful stomach, swollen in the way
only pregnancy could make it. Five months now. He could not wait.
"Hn?" Relena was starting to wake up.
"Heero, you are staring again! It's not like he's going to born
today, you know? It's nice, though... Very father-to-be like."
"Hn.." Heero couldn't help it. He would have never believed that
some day, today, his greatest joy would be lying opposite
his lady love and stare at her stomach, trying to imagine the
new life in it. He placed his palms in the big belly.
"Thats nice... Nice..." Relena muttered in a sleepy voice. "Uh,
Heero? Would you move a little? I have to go to the
bathroom.. Now!"
Heero moved. Never argue with a pregnant woman when she have to
go.
They had tried to have a baby four years now. Every one waited
them to have a child right after the royal wedding, but it
was not that easy. they had been discussing an option of
adoption when Relena find out she was finally pregnant. They
were quiet about it a long time, they didn't even dare to buy
anything related to baby until recently. They had ventured in
the baby store and it was like a flood barriers were broken when
they bought everything possible and more to the baby. Of course
the paparazzi photographers had nailed them, but it
didn't matter to them anymore. Soon the whole world knew
about
the upcoming prince or princess. Only their closest
friends, Duo, Trowa, Quatre, Wufei and Wufei's wife,
Moira had known about the pregnancy before the news went public.
He felt so helpless he felt you kicking
there was voice so gentle and calming
he placed his hand where he thought you would be
he called you sleeping beauty
They were at the ultra sound again. Heero was nervous because he
knew it was not common to have them so many, but he was
explained that Relena had pregnancy diabetes and it was normal
to monitor the baby closer then than normal. Relena looked
at the fuzzy picture with Heero and the doctor with sparks
in her eyes.
"Well, it's a boy, all right... Why it doesn't move? It should
be moving, right?"
The doctor smiled to the new parents. Royal as they were, they
were just like any other new parents, eager but unsure.
"He is sleeping, that's why he doesn't move much. Let's not
wake him, it's not necessary."
Heero looked the monitor closer and placed his hands at the side
of Relena's belly. "Hello there, my sleeping boy, my sleeping
beauty."
Relena chuckled. "Heero, it's a boy."
"Yes, he is my sleeping beautiful boy."
Heero had a habbit to talk to the baby every day. Relena was
amused by that, but Heero insisted that talking to the child
and explaining the world even before the birth made the child
more intelligent. Relena laughed and said that she knew the real
reason Heero talked to the little one. He sang for him too.
Was he trying to make the little one musical?
All births do not start in the middle of the night. This one
started in the morning. In one morning six weeks too early. They
rushed in the small private hospital, came through the back
door and to the waiting arms of the hospital staff. Six
weeks too early was not bad, they were told. The birth date was
always plus minus two weeks and four weeks was not a problem.
"Hey my lovely wife, had I told you that I love you?" Heero asked
as he hold he's wife's hand, keeping her company.
"My lovely husband, not in five minutes. You still love me, after
all this five long minutes?"Relena was tired after six hours
of nothing, but she still keeped up the good mood.
"Yes, still loving, and the junior too. I can't wait to see him!"
It was a long birth. Over 24 hours and still it wasn't uncommon,
they were told. Heero was with Relena almost all the time,
when he was not giving reports to his friends, who were arrived to
support them. Duo patted Heero to shoulder.
"Relax, Heero, this isn't a mission!"
Quatre had not been able to just wait and worry,so he went
to see the newborns. He looked longingly trough the glass at the
tiny babies. He smiled and sighed. He and Trowa were trying to
adopt, but the thought of the responsibility had scared
them to wait always a little bit longer. Maybe the wait would
finally be over, Quatre thought, whatching the babies in pinks and
blues.
Moira was in a lecturing tour and it was Wufei who took care at
their kids meanwhile. Not that he minded, but he hadn't able
to find a sitter and was forced to took his girls, Miya and
Meggan to the hospital with him. The girls had soon discovered
the wonders of a vending machine and with the generous
funding from uncles Quatre and Duo they were in a candy heaven.
"Dad, can we buy candy to the baby too?" asked Miya, trying to
con another bag of M&M's.
"No, darling, babies don't eat candy and neither should you. Go
find your sister and then perhaps you could have some hot
chocolate."
Miya ran to find her sister. Perhaps uncle Duo had a heart and he
would buy them some more candy! They hadn't, after all, tasted
all the brands in the machine yet!
Your first breath was your last breath
he heard it oh before the silence
gone the unheard cry
the day stood still
he's mouth went dry
Something went wrong. Very, very wrong. Relena was crying when
the baby's heart monitor started to beep irregularly.
They all did their best.
The baby died. The sleeping beauty died.
when he heard the news he felt so helpless
what have I done to really deserve this
he raised his palms and preyed forgiveness
I would give my life to save his
Heero just watched helplessly as the nursing staff tried to bring
the child back to life. He wanted to hold him, but they
didn't let him. His world had just turned to too small suffocating
space with loss and sorrow too much to bear.
behind the child
fathers cries
I never seen a crown man cry
he said I never felt this way before
sleeping beauty sleep no more
I never felt this way before
sleeping beauty sleep no more
he sleeps behind the reach of dreams
in a room that has no doors
It was over. The nursing staff had given up. The monitors were
shut off. They had been left alone to say goodbye to their
child. Relena cried in the bed, holding the tiny baby.
Heero ran his fingers on the cold cheach and then kissed the baby.
He could not let go. What if there was some way, some
miracle that would wake his sleeping beauty? Anything?
so if I kissed you now
would I be your prince charming
or just a ordinary man
who tried to kiss you back
back to life
Heero took the baby and sat down to the floor, holding the baby
and humming to it.
"Heero... You- You have to let him go. He's gone, Heero... "
Relena gathered herself. She was in such pain from the loss that
it felt like it would kill her, but she knew that it would
not happen. She had to be strong, for Heero. She dropped slowly
off from the table to hug Heero and their nameless child.
"Let's say goodbye to him, Heero. Just say goodbye..."
don't turn your back no
turn around
turn around if your love still finds you
turn around I'm still here beside you
you know my name and you have seen my face
your memory is my cry in my lonely place
"Shush, Heero.. I'm here... I will always be with you..."
behind the child
mothers cries
My tears are never ever dry
she said I never felt this way before
sleeping beauty sleep no more
endless sleep
Meggan ventured back in the waiting room, where daddy and the
others were.
"Daddy, I- " She stopped. Why was uncle Duo laughing? No, uncle
Duo was not laughing. The heaving, long sobs... He was crying?
Adults didn't cry. She climbed in daddys arms and sat there.
She didn't say anything. In her own way, she knew.
The funeral day was cold and bright.
"We have gathered today here to mourn the passing of Alex Joshua Duo Yuy..."
on the stone the words remain:
I love you endlessly
END.
