Arthurian Legend

The original story of the Arthurian Legend was written in a black book, which was lost or burnt a few centuries ago. As a result, there are now many versions of this legend. The legend is a fairytale set in the time of King Arthur's reign.

Merlin
Another name for this mysterious wizard/druid/alchemist is Myrrin. A rumour is that he is the offspring of a peasant girl and demon of the air. His tutor in spellcraft is a hermit called Blaise. 'Myrrdin' means fortress while 'Merlin' means mermaid. The real  'Merlin' is believed to be Arthur's advisor, Dyfrig (or Dubricus) which means waterman in Welsh, and merman in Latin. Merlin is portrayed as either a good or evil wizard.

Lady of the Lake
She is known as Viviane or Nimue. As Viviane, she is thought to have learned Merlin's magic and used the knowledge to enslave him in a mountain. However, as Nimue, she is Merlin's lover.

The Sword
Excalibur is the legendary sword that Arthur drew from a stone and became King of Briton. Excaliburn means out of stone. Caliburn means cut of steel and a sword made of gold, silver, iron quicksilver, tin, copper and lead.

Morgan Le Fay
Her other name is Morgause. She is the half-sister of King Arthur. In yet another, but most common version, she instead of Viviane, enslaved Merlin in a mountain.

Ambrosius Aurelians
In the legend, he is Arthur's evil uncle and brother of Uther Pendragon. In history however, he is one of the last Romans. He also governed Britain in the last half of the 5th century and helped stem the tide of Saxon advance in the days prior to Arthur.

Sir Bedivere
He was one of King Arthur's knights and he returned Excailbur to Viviane after Arthur's death.

Sir Percivale
He was another one of Arthur's knights who was most closely associated with the quest for the Holy Grail.
