These days people are pushing their older cars to go the extra mile. To find the silver lining of the slumping economy, cruise no further than your local auto repair shop. "It's better for the economy if people buy new cars because it effects more people. It's better for me if they don't," says Joe Gottman, owner of Gottman's Automotive Repair. Gottman says his Rockford repair shop has seen a sharp increase in business, as more and more people are turning away from new car payments, even if it means a costly fix. "Usually, you tell somebody 15 to 18-hundred dollars, then they say no, that would have been last year, this year everybody's saying yes," says Gottman. "I used to drive 'em 'til they needed too much work and then I'd buy a new one, but now, gas accessories for cars is so high I fix 'em and just keep driving it," says Gottman's customer Don Perry. One example of a car that might not have gotten a second chance in a better economy: After 13 years on the road, the owners are still willing to invest more than $1,000 in repairs. Gottman says the only danger is that some people let repairs go for too long, winding up with a much bigger job, or just driving around in an unsafe vehicle. "Maintain everything as needed and don't let things go," cautions Gottman. That's a lesson that's driving home right now for frugal drivers, even those who are new behind the wheel. "I watch like when it's time to get my oil changed, get it changed, driving safely, try not to hit potholes and stuff like that," says 16-year old driver Abby Embry. And that attitude reflects the brighter side of the gloomy state of the auto industry. Gottman says his customers typically will keep a car for five to seven years, but he's starting to see that lifetime go up. He adds as long as you maintain a car with frequent oil changes and minor repairs, you can drive it for decades.
