The Beginning of my Literacy
One moment that impacted my literacy in writing and reading had to be the day that I read the book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I think that this was the first novel that I actually enjoyed reading. Also, I think that this was the first novel that I had actually read aside from reading small children’s book.
The day that I got my hands on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is a moment I will remember forever in the development of my literacy in reading and writing. I remember that it was a Saturday, and I went to my local library to pick up a few books. It was actually my first time ever going to a public library. When I was looking for books, I basically picked them by the cover or the title of the book if it looked cool. When I saw Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, the title appealed to my sense of taste and the cover also appealed to me, so I picked it off the shelf. When I got home that morning I picked up the book and started reading it. When I was reading the book I just could not stop reading it for a moment. The story and action going on in the book kept me reading. I was picturing everything that was going on in my head. I could not believe that I was actually having fun reading a book. I could have been playing videogames or playing outside with friends, but instead I was sitting down reading and I was having just as much fun.
The book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory would lead me to read more great novels over the years. Furthermore, I believe Charlie and the Chocolate Factory made me want to read books for leisure instead of being forced to books I did not like. I believe that it takes only one good book to jump start the beginning of person’s literacy in reading and writing. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory just happened to be the right book to the beginning of my literacy.
