Questions often asked about testing

Why are your rates so much cheaper than other testers?

That’s simple.  I’m a home school mom that has lived on one income for a long time.  I             need to earn a reasonable fee for my service.  I don’t need to make a hundred dollars an hour.  Giving the test for siblings doesn’t cost me any more than giving the test one time other than a few copies.  It’s a matter of principle for me.

When is the best time to test?

The WRAT can be given at anytime.  Any test given between July 1 of one year and June 30 of the next year counts in that academic year to fulfill the annual testig requirements of NC DNPI.  Many new homeschool parents choose to test in the late summer before school and many choose to test in the fall when the schedule is less hectic.  Knowing early where your child is working can help you successfully navigate the first year and / or make changes before an entire year is wasted.  It is suggested that testing be done around the same time each year.

Why choose the WRAT?

This test is ideal for these situations:

     1)   The child's other test scores are extremely high or low for grade level or they do not reflect true         performance.

     2)  The child is very young, his attention wanders or he has trouble with timed tests.

     3)  The child is reading very well or very poorly for his age.

     4)  The parents feel the need for outside input regarding their child's achievement level and /  or curriculum choices.

     5)  The parents need or prefer to get test scores immediately and have them explained thoroughly rather than waiting the 4-6 weeks usually required for other tests.

More information about the wrat

The Jastak Wide Range Achievement Test (WRAT) is an individualized academic achievement test approved by the Department of Non-Public Instruction to meet the annual testing requirements for homeschool students.  Administered by an experienced testing consultant in less than one (1) hour, some portions of the test are oral and other parts are written.  Test scores are obtained immediately.  There are no bubble sheets to complete on this test.  There are three sections of the test that measure academic fluency and are timed.

The WRAT contains items across a wide range of difficulty.  Therefore, the grade level scores reflect the actual level of test difficulty the student can perform and may be used to decide grade placement.  In addition, a Relative Mastery Index predicts the student’s success with grade level material. Using these two measures, the consultant and parent can decide which areas may need improvement and which areas are accelerated for that student.  The parent receives a written and a verbal explanation of the scores from the test administrator who is also able to make curriculum recommendations.

By comparison, multiple choice, grade specific tests (like the CAT and IOWA) are composed of items within a limited range of difficulty.  As a consequence, the grade equivalent scores are not very useful for grade placement and planning.  For example, on the CAT test for the third grade, if a third grade student earns a grade equivalent of.6.5 it does not mean that the child will be successful on test associated with sixth grade.  Rather, it means that the student got the same number of third grade items correct that a student in the middle of the sixth grade would have.  This score reflects accuracy on third grade material rather than achievement level.

Purpose:  Designed to measure recognition, spelling, and arithmetic computation.

Population: Ages 5-11, 12-over

Score: 3 scores: Spelling, Arithmetic and Reading.

Time: (20-30) minutes.

Authors: Joseph F. and Sarah Jastak

Description:  The Wide Range Achievement Test (WRAT) is a brief achievement test measuring reading recognition, spelling, and arithmetic computation.  There are two levels; level 1 is normed for children ages 5yr-0mo to 11yr-11mo; level 2 is normed for children ages 12yr 0mo- through adults aged 64.

Scoring:  Norms provided for the WRAT Test include standard scores with a mean of 100 and a standard deviation of 1.5 percentile points.

Reliability: Reliabilities of .98 for Reading at both levels, .94 for Arithmetic at both levels, .96 for Spelling 1, and .97 for Spelling 2.

Validity: The test most similar to the WRAT is the Peabody Individual Achievement Test (PIAT), another short, individually administered test which covers comparable material.  In general the WRAT correlates very highly with the PIAT.  It also correlates moderately with various IQ tests, in the range of .40 to .70 for most groups and most tests.

Norms: The Norms are based on 15,200 subjects from seven states.  The sample was stratified by age, sex, and approximately by ability.

Suggested Uses: Comparing achievement of one person to another, determining learning ability or learning disability, comparing codes with comprehension in order to prescribe remedial programs and adhering to the general statutes of North Carolina’s Department of Non-Public Instruction.
