Many Christians -- especially Catholics and Greek Orthodox -- believe that Jesus was crucified on this spot and buried here. Here He shed His blood for us on the cross and rose from the dead so that we can have forgiveness of our sins.
Emperor Constantine the Great had a church erected on this site in 325 A.D. The buildings were destroyed and rebuilt several times through the centuries. The recent church that stands no was build during the crusadires time and is placed above the original church. |
