Carrollton/Riverbend and Uptown The town of Carrollton (incorporated in 1843) began growing at the bend of the river, with growth promoted by the New Orleans and Carrollton Railroad and fed by the town's reputation as a resort. Neighborhood development ocurred mostly in the 1940's and 1950's. Starting as a dairy pasture, it was sold off as individual parcels. It has tremendous potential for redevelopment, especially given the proximity to jobs, public transportation, I-10 and universities. The Carrollton/Riverbend area of Uptown begins arround Broadway to the river, from Magazine to Claiborne. Uptown, generally, starts at Louisiana to the river, from Tchoupitoulas to Claiborne. The Uptown area is the core of residential New Orleans and one of the largest integrated neighborhood areas in the United States. There is a great variety of people living and working in the Uptown area - people of all ages, races, religions, nationality, and socio-economic backgrounds. From the million dollar mansions that line St. Charles Avenue to modest cottages, Uptown has a home for anyone. * Also of major importance is that a certain portion of Uptown (particularly that between Broadway and Adams from St. Charles to Spruce Street) are located in an EXCELLENT public elementary school district - Lusher Elementary School. If you are looking to place your elementary school-aged children in PUBLIC school, this is a must see area.
