| Lakeview Proximity to Lake Pontchartrain is just one of the advantages of the Lakeview area. Not only for the cooling breezes of Lake Pontchartrain, but also for the miles of parks that line Lakeshore Drive. With more of a suburbian feel to it, Lakeview is one of the safest areas in New Orleans and also boasts a family atmosphere. Known for its excellent public schools of Hynes Elementary and Ben Franklin, Sr. High School, Lakeview also boasts some of the areas most affordable private schools as well such as St. Paul's Lutheran School, St. Dominic Episcopal School, and Mt. Carmel Academy. In the 1900s the New Orleans Levee Board reclaimed land from Lake Pontchartrain what was to become the Lakefront subdivisions of East & West Lakeshore, Lake Vista, Lake Terrace and Lake Oaks. Most of thes homes in these areas were built in the 1950s and 1960s. The housing is a combination of frame cottages, sprawling brick ranchs and architectural delights, both old and new. The lakefront is home to several local favorite seafood restaurants. Combining a beautiful setting with a convenient commute to downtown, Lakeview is a great choice to call home. * Please note that flooding fromthe 17th Street Canal completely devastated this area of town (with anywhere from 5-11 feet of water) and for the most part, there is some re-building, but it is far from being back to normal with the majority of the area still without power. Average housing costs: $280,000-350,000 (PreKatrina) $150,000-250,000 (After Katrina/after flooding) Average rent: 1 bedroom: $500-600 (Pre Katrina) 2 bedrooms: $750-850 (Pre Katrina) 3 bedrooms: $900-1,100 (Pre Katrina) For more information on this area, visit: Architecture in Lakeview area Lakeview Civic Association Greater New Orleans Community Data Center Detailed (and I mean REALLY detailed) map of Lakeview How is crime in this area?
