Algiers Point & Algiers Settled in 1917, and connected to downtown New Orleans by ferry in 1827, is Algiers Point (also referred to as "Old Algiers"). In 1895, some 250 homes (roughly 20 acres) were destroyed when the neighborhood suffered a devastating fire. Here and there you can find older homes in the greek revival architectural style, but for the most part the area consists of "shotgun" styled homes. Algiers Point is the area located just on the other side of the French Quarter with only the Mississippi River in between the two. Accessible to downtown New Orleans via ferry (for pedestrians the ferry is FREE - vehicles are allowed on the ferry for a minimal fee, I believe the fee is $2.00 from the Algiers side only) or the Crescent City Connection bridge (which also has a toll of $2.00 from the Westbank/Aliers side only), and is just minutes away from downtown. Algiers Point has become a "hot spot" for people wishing to rennovate homes and the neighborhood has seen a renaissance of sorts from their efforts. Bed & Breakfasts, coffee shops, restaurants, corner groceries and gift shops dot the neighborhood as well. House pricing range (average): $125,000-$170,000 Rental range (average): 1 bedroom: $500-550 2 bedrooms: $700-800 3 bedrooms: $900+ For more information: Greater New Orleans Community Data Center Algiers & Algiers PointInfo. on RelocateNewOrleans.com Algiers and Algiers Point Architecture Algiers Online Algiers Point Neighborhood Association How is crime in this area?
