Nuggets of Joy
A few weeks ago I met all of my neighbours in one fell swoop at our monthly cleaning ritual where we supposedly tidy up around the building.  In reality we just lazily poke at the dirt with hoes, pull up some stray grass which seems to be everywhere, and then pay our landlady some bills.  I`ll have to post a "before" and "after" picture.  It would be a neat game having you guess which is which, since I can perceive no difference and I was there.

At any rate, one of my neighbours is an English teacher at another high school.  She speaks really well and just recently returned from studying in Arizona.  We have a lot in common and she has since become one of my closest friends.

The first night we cooked together I learned heaps and laughed lots.  Because she just returned from the US and is passionate about English, she`s picked up a fair bit of slang.  She kept saying "just nuke it" over and over.  Even though I don`t have a microwave and I haven`t personally said "nuke it" in many years, I wasn`t about to stop her.  Instead, I was impressed by her knowledge and correct usage of this and other colloquialisms.

I then decided to enlighten her about the origin of this expression.  Without hesitation I proceeded to tell her that "nuke" is short for "nuclear."

Only after the words came out of my mouth did I realize I had just said that to a Japanese person.

Whoops!
