THE STAFF

Welcome into Percy's head. You might find everything a bit crooked and sick-minded in here but try to get along. You have to remember that nobody is perfect - except Percy or at least he himself thinks that!

Below you will find the character analyses by Percy of every staff member he was in contact with. In the end of this page you will find a link that will lead you to the analyses made about the prisoners. I hope you enjoy!

Warden Moores
In two words: incabable leader. I mean that he does not have any awareness of his own opinion. At first, Edgecombe has him under a full control. Edgecombe can make him to do what ever he wants. Secondly, I experienced this myself when I proposed for him that I wanted to take apart in the execution as the leader. It only required a promise that I would be moving away from the block after that. Edegecombe was for the idea so Moores had to be also. It's a pity that you let men like that be on such a high posts as the head of the prison.

Paul Edgecombe
Paul Edgecombe is our chief on this block. He is a bit crooked. I mean that sometimes he is like anybody of us - can be even a nice fellow. Then again, sometimes he gets these weird ideas in his head. For example, when we brought in John Coffey, he was standing there in front of Coffey's cell. He does this every time we bring in somebody. He propably thinks that by doing that he look likes somebody important. Anyway, after we got Coffey in and I thought that we could teach him a little so that we could make him respect us. In my opinion this would have been needed because he was a huge guy and if he wants to make trouble... At that moment Edgecombe got one of his weird ideas. He said that I was needed on another block where they were moving. I said that there is already enough men and Edgecombe exploded. He shouted to me: "I want you to leave my block immediately!" Like E-block would be his!

His self-centred nature is easily noticed. If you are nice with him, he is nice and good with you. But not vice versa. He has never been nice to me without me being first to him. I just sometimes don't understand what's going on in his head. He also likes to command people but does in the end the opposite he requires from us. For example, being close to a prisoner alone is highly forbidden from us but not from Edgecombe. Just turn your back and his at somebody's cell. When you shout to him about that, he just starts his favorite phrase: "We are not here to scare the prisoners. They have it enough hard anyway so that is why we don't go on shouting here. Do you understand?"

Brutus Howell
Brutus Howell is called Brutal because of his huge size. I've always hoped to become a man of his size but ended up like this. Brutal's problem is that he does not know how to use his size for his own benefit. He just walks after Edgecombe like a puppy. Edgecombe has full control over him. Once Edgecombe used Brutal to put me into the restraint room. Of course I couldn't do anything against Brutal, but I could have easily defeated Edgecombe.

Howell actually once rescued all of us on the block. This happened when William Wharton was brought in. Wharton got loose and attacked the guards. In the middle of the fight Howell stepped in and took my baton and hit Wharton with all his strength. I thought that I even heard Wharton's skull breaking in pieces but that bastard survived.

Harry Terwilliger
Harry is the oldest guard on the block. I think we all respect him for that. That's why he is also the one who puts the cap on prisoners' head when they are executed. He, like Howell, is always on Edgecombe's side. I think that even if he is more experienced than us, he should retire before something bigger happens. Namely, during the fight with Wharton he couldn't do anything to stop Wild-Bill. Honestly speaking, I wouldn't let him be alone at the duty desk if he is that weak. Anybody could run away during his shift because he is so old and slow!

Dean Stanton
He is the youngest amongst us. In my opinion he is not that much on Edgecombe's side. He also gets these lousy jobs to do, such as cleaning. I think that he is the smartest guy on the block and has a great future if Edgecombe retires soon because under Edgecombe Dean becomes a pussy like the others. I think that we two understand best each other because we are both quite young. What I've found out is that he has a beautiful wife and children. I bet that he is a very good and kind husband and father. I hope he doesn't bring that kindness to the block where ruthless power and order are needed.

Toot-Toot
He is the dirty salesman wandering around the block selling old cookies, sandwiches, cigarettes and stuff like that. We always use him when we train for the executions. In my opinion we could some time let the electricity go for real through his body. After all nobody would care. He is just a filthy disgrace for the whole prison with his terrible looking sales wagon. He even cheated 20 cents from me when I once bought cigarettes from him.
