Have you ever heard of a war that was started over a pig? Well either did I until I went to the San Juan Islands. Other than learning about a war that nearly started over the death of a pig, the San Juan Islands offer a lot of fun stuff.
These islands house the largest single nesting area for Bald Eagles in the United States. They're kind of impossible to miss. One of the best things to do while there (after getting the good old National Parks Stamp of course) is to do some sea kayaking. There's no better way to experience the sea life and see the beauty of the islands' shores. Maybe you'll be luckier than I was and actually get to see a whale, I'm told they are very abundant in that area. I think they were hinding from me.
This is a great place to visit although you should have at least a full day to spend because of the necessary ferry ride out there. Plan for two days if you're going kayaking (make reservations in advance). And then give yourself and your aching muscles a day afterward to rest!
