SPRINGFIELD - A former stage hand was sentenced yesterday to nearly 18 years in federal prison for collecting and trading in child pornography.
Richard A. Skiba, porn kolt 35, of West Springfield, earlier pleaded guilty to three counts of transportation of child pornography and one count of possession of child pornography. He has been held without bail since his arrest by federal agents last year.
Investigators found nearly 10,000 digital images of children - some ranging from infants and toddlers to 5-year-olds - on his computer. Many were sobbing in the photos, and were bound or caged while being subjected to sexual abuse by adults, Assistant U.S. Attorney Steven H. Breslow said in court filings and during Skiba's sentencing in U.S. District Court.
Breslow urged an even higher sentence, partly as a deterrent against the spread of Internet child porn.
"That's the only way, in the end, from keeping a person cartoon flash porn from grabbing a child and a digital video camera," the prosecutor said.
Congress has enacted steep sentencing guidelines for child porn Internet brokers to quell the proliferation of child porn on the Web. Even with no criminal record, Skiba's was the minimum sentence he faced under federal guidelines.
A weepy Skiba told the sentencing judge he had only amassed the photos in a candice michelle porn quest for what he called "his own footage," - video he said was shot while he was sexually abused when he was 10 years old.
"I just wanted to find some balance in my life," he told U.S. District Judge Michael A. Ponsor.
Few details of the alleged abuse were revealed in court. Many of the documents in the case were sealed.
However, defense attorney Lori H. Levinson told a judge she believed Skiba's improbable story of his abuse at the hands of "an older woman" and a "friend," that he disclosed to her for bisexual porn the first time after his arrest.
"I don't think this person, with his mental picture, could have made that up," she told Ponsor, citing the detail with which Skiba told her the story, without recounting the details. "I was absolutely stunned by how real he made it sound."
Levinson said he sought and traded "the most depraved, sickening stuff" in the hopes of reclaiming his own video footage.
Two psychiatric experts associated with the case were skeptical of Skiba's story, Ponsor noted, after telling lawyers he reviewed several of the "viscerally hot porn videos loathsome" images contained on the defendant's hard drive.
"It's very, very hard to understand how anyone could enjoy looking at them," Ponsor said.
Skiba, who had worked as a behind-the-scenes employee for various music artists, was arrested soon after he traveled to meet his cousin and her 4-year-old daughter for a sexual encounter in North Carolina, according to court records.
He secured adjoining hotel suites and brought with him circus tickets, handcuffs and duct 3d incest porn tape, records state. The meeting never went off, though Skiba boasted sample videos porn bdsm about it graphically to an undercover agent via instant messaging online.
