In the End - by Dori Bushee

She sat at the edge of the bed, holding his hand tightly in hers, promising herself she wouldn't let him see the tears in her eyes, as she tried so hard to swallow the lump in her throat, her heart aching the whole time.
Somehow she had always known this time would come, and as much as she had told herself it would be a blessing in disguise, now that the time had finally arrived, she found herself wanting him to stay just a little longer.
There were so many things she wish they could have shared together, and so many words yet unspoken, but now none of that mattered as his time was slipping away right before her eyes and she could do nothing to stop it.
If fate had only been a little kinder, she wondered what the outcome of both of their lives would have been like, had they taken different paths and met much sooner then they had.
All the memories they could have shared together would now just be left to her imagination, along with the unfullfilled fantasies that would no doubtedly be what she would keep within her heart for many years to come.
She now regretted those times when harsh words were spoken that would keep them apart, breaking both of their hearts, while neither of them knew how to swallow their pride and say they were sorry to one another.
It all came together now and made some sense to her, but now it was really too late to change anything, yet she hoped that somehow he knew just how much she really loved him.
As his breathing became more labored, the color seemed to drain from his face, and she feared that if he closed his eyes one more time it would more than likely be the last time, so she fought even harder to keep smiling.
In the end, it was all about emotions and not about anything but loving someone and them loving you back, and if nothing else, she hoped as he would take his journey into the unknown, he would be taking that love with him.
She took her eyes off of him for one brief moment, as a slight breeze moved the curtains in the room, then looking back, she noticed his eyes had now closed and he had a peaceful look upon his face.
Now she would no longer have to hold back her tears, nor swallow the lump in her throat, and the aching in her heart that had now grown ten times over, would be her constant companion for many a lonely day and night.
Finally, letting go of his hand, she placed a kiss on his cheek for the very last time, and while she knew she had to let him go in the real world, he would forever remain in her heart and in her dreams.
