You never saw her cry. This lovely child, a gift from God, not only brought joy into their lives, but found joy when no one else could.
“Don’t worry Daddy. I don’t need anything new,” she said when her father lost his job.
“Grandma, if you can’t find your new cane you can lean on me. I’m short enough to fit and strong enough to hold you up!” she said after Grandma learned she needed a cane to help her get around.
Katie was their only child. Married for more than ten years before she came along, her parents were told they’d never be able to have children. But the doctors didn’t know that God was in control and Katie, well, one just might think she conspired with God to make it happen.
Katie had an answer to everything, it seemed.
“Why is the sky blue?”
“Because God had too much blue paint and didn’t know what to do with it!” she said.
“Why do birds sing all the time?”
“In case we don’t have a radio when we go for a walk!” Katie replied.
Always laughing and full of joy, Katie was a welcome sight throughout the neighborhood.
“How are you young lady?” her neighbor, Mr. “J” would ask.
“Absolutely fine!” she’d reply each time. “My Grandpa taught me that.”
No one had ever seen her unhappy. That is until the “raindrops.”
It was really a routine checkup that day. Katie hadn’t been her old cheerful self lately. Her energy was down but her smile was always up.
“You’d smile through a hurricane, wouldn’t you!” the doctor said to her.
“It’s just air!” she replied.
“I need to speak with your mom and dad, Katie. Could you go see if my nurse needs any extra help?” the doctor asked.
You could tell her parents were nervous. They smiled as Katie left the room, but anxiously questioned the doctor as soon as the door closed.
“She’s fine, right?” Mom asked.
“I’m concerned about her weight loss and her energy level is way off,” the doctor said. “We’ll know more after I run some blood tests.”
Three weeks later it was confirmed. Katie had a rare cancer.
It’s rare for a doctor to make a house call these days, but Katie was a special child. The doctor and Katie’s parents thought it best if they could all be together when they had to explain to Katie what was wrong.
There in the living room with family and friends all around, they carefully and openly explained to Katie what she had ahead of her.
Smiling through the entire conversation, Katie never said a word.
Suddenly, without explanation, tears began to trickle down her cheeks.
“Katie, are you alright?”
“Yes, Mommy. Why?”
“You’re crying. Katie, I never saw you cry before,” her dad said.
“I’m not crying. They are God’s raindrops. I was scared for a minute and He was washing away my “scared,” she said.
There was silence in the room.
“Look! I told you. See, you have raindrops on your face, too” Katie said.
Sure enough it rained a lot that day. Everyone there had their “scared” washed away, too.
Katie, the miracle child, went home less than six months later.
