Smile at the Beast by Tammi Williams

Smile, it's contagious.
Don't worry about looking like a clown,
If it works, who's to say we're outrageous?
When you're feeling tired and down,
It takes more effort to frown.

Smile - a big full teeth one will do,
It helps to take away the blues.
A smile is the best way to say, "I care about you!"
Maybe you've just gotten good news,
Or maybe you want to forget about those clues.

Smile - it's the best ammunition around,
To hit the BEAST where it counts!
Don't let IT change the YOU that lets happiness abound.
We all know how the tension mounts;
When the BEAST is about to pounce.

Smile - and stick your tongue out, too!
You've still got a trick or two,
The BEAST had better get a clue -
You are still you, no matter what IT decides to do!
So put on that smiley face and I'll celebrate with you!

By Tammi Williams, 2003

I was diagnosed with MS in 08/02.  Have been through many stages of dealing with this diagnosis from happiness (yes, happy that I'm not 'crazy' after all) to shock to fear.  Fear has given way to FIGHT.  We only have two choices; fight or flight, I have chosen to fight.  Sometimes the fight takes more out of me than I have (energy) and I begin to question the choice.  This poem is my way of reminding myself to not take things quite so seriously.  After reading the poem to myself several days later, I realized the "Beast" can be whatever a person is dealing with at the time in their life, therefore many people other than those of us with MS could relate to the poem.
