| Part Five Previously: Enging 51 finds Roy and Johnny Authors Notes: ***** "Dwyer? Were did you come from?" asked Roy excited he began coughing. He began coughing very hard. Dwyer rolled Roy over as he coughed again this time he coughed up blood. Brice had heard Roy coughing and looked up as Dwyer rolled him over and he saw the blood. "Rampart Base this is squad 110 do you copy over?" said Brice. "Go ahead 110" came Brackett�s voice. "Rampart we are at the scene of Squad 51. We have 2 victims, victim 1 is Roy Desoto, I believe you already instructed start 2 IV's. However, upon arriving to the scene. The patient was unconscious, but is now conscious and has begun coughing up blood and having increase difficulty in breathing." Said Brice. "Increase flow of oxygen. Try and keep him on his side and transport as soon as possible. Do you have eta of ambulance yet?" "Negative Rampart unknown at this time. "10-4 - patient 2?" Brackett asked. "Patient 2 John Gage Upon arrival he was conscious and grouchy. He has a broken right ankle. Upon arrival he became aggravated and tried to stand up and blacked out. Vitals seam to be normal and pulse rate a little fast at 100." "10-4, start IV with ringers, then if he wakes up 10 cc of morphine if needed. Then transport when stable." said Brackett. "10-4," said Brice. Captain Stanley grabbed his radio and said "La this is engine 51 what is the eta of an ambulance to our location?" "Engine 51 ETA at this time is unknown." "LA what about a helicopter?" "Engine 51 choppers are all in use for water drops will make helicopter available if there is a life threatening situation." said Sam. Captain Stanley looked at Dwyer and he nodded. "If we wait for an ambulance, I don't know if he'll make it. We need to get him to Rampart now." said Dwyer looking at Roy who had once again sunk into unconsciousness. "La Engine 51 10-4 we need you to avert a helicopter to our location. We have a fireman with life threatening injuries. We are running out of time can't wait for an ambulance." said Captain Stanley. "10-4 51 Eta is 5 minutes." came Sam's voice over the radio. "10-4 LA" said Cap. "Let�s get them ready to move!" yelled Cap. They placed Roy and Johnny in 2 stokes and secured them. Soon the helicopter arrived. As they loaded Roy and Johnny in. 110's paramedics went on board and headed for Rampart. Roy had been placed on his right side. He opened his eyes and looked around. "Johnny?" he asked with hardly any voice. "He's here shhhh, save your strength your almost to the hospital. You both going just be fine." said Dwyer. "Where are we?" asked Roy. "We�re in a helicopter heading for Rampart." said Dwyer. "Do me a favor make sure Morton doesn't work on Johnny. He had Brice. One pain a day is enough." said Roy. He had no idea Brice heard him. Dwyer did all he could to keep from laughing. Roy drift off back to sleep. Dwyer shrugged his shoulders at Brice. "He's not himself don't hold that against him either." yelled Dwyer to be heard over the chopper. Brice nodded. They felt the chopper dip a little when they were landing. Once the chopper had landed they were met by Dr. Brackett, Dixie, Dr. Early and Dr. Morton and a few orderly and nurses. They unloaded Roy first and put him on a stretcher. "How's he doing?" asked Brackett. "He was awake for a few minutes ago. Then he said something about Dr. Morton and Brice. He has had very little coughing since we put him on his side, blood pressure however has drop to 90/60 rep. 32 and pulse is 100." said Dwyer. "Ok treatment room 2 is set up. Let's get moving people. Carol have OR on stand by." ordered Brackett. He went with Roy and Dixie followed. Next they pulled out Johnny. "Brice?" "Doc vitals are bp140/80 pulse is 100 rep. 30. B/P has been slowly rising as if he's stressed and getting worse. Left ankle is broken. He was agitated at the scene before he passed out." said Brice. "Ok treatment room 3" said Joe as he and Morton walked with the stretcher Once inside the hospital they headed for the treatment room. When they heard a commotion up a head. "Hold his head. quick lets get him inside. and get me 2cc Avain IV" Dr. Morton looked at what was going on. "Looks like Roy having another seizure." said Mike. "Go give Kel a hand I've got Johnny. Mike Morton nodded and went to help Kel. Once he got inside the room he helped hold the shaking paramedic. After a couple of minutes after Carol gave the medication Roy's body began to relax. "Ok people let's get some x-rays, I want a full skull series. I want all limbs and chest and back I want labs, Chem 7, CBC, hemoglobens the works." said Brackett checking under the bandages on Roy�s head. "I want to schedule a cat scan also." He felt around Roy�s middle section and said "I believe he�s got some internal injuries lets get the x-rays and blood work stat." said Brackett. "Or is standing by Kel." said Dixie getting another set of vitals. "Ok thanks Dix." said Kel "I'll be right back, I'm going go check on Johnny." said Kel as the x-ray techs came through the door. "Mike keep a close eye on him!" said Kel. "I will Kel." said Mike. He helped get the x-rays and blood drawn for the labs. Joe Early had taken Johnny into the treatment room with Brice and Dwyer as a nurse helped Joe with Johnny. The nurse got his vitals. "The vitals are the same doctor!" said Sharon the student nurse. Brice put him on some oxygen about 6 liters. "Anything else you guys can tell me? I figured he would be awake by now." said Joe. "Doc we have told you all we know." said Brice putting on the oxygen. "I know he was in a lot of smoke and heat he just maybe worn out." said Dwyer. "Sharon I want a full blood work up and x-rays of this leg and a full chest and skull series." "yes Doctor." said Sharon. J oe, Dwyer, and Brice then walked out of the room and into the hall to the nurses station. They were met by Kel. "Joe how Johnny?" "Don't know Kel. he's still unconscious his vitals are a little high and fast. But I can�t find nothing to explain the agitation in his vitals. How�s Roy?" asked Joe. "He had another seizure coming in, it's the second one we know of. I'd say internal bleeding? His bp is low. He's also still unconscious." said Kel "We got some pretty sick boys here" said Joe. "Listen Docs we gotta get back, keep us informed? Oh by the way the police are sending someone to pick up Joanne." said Dwyer "Thank you guys and be careful out there? We�ll keep you informed" said Joe. Brice and Dwyer left the hospital and headed for the chopper to return to the fire. The x-ray tech was done with the boys and headed to develop the film. Kel and Joe went to Roy�s room. "How he doing?" Kel asked Mike. "Same" said Mike as Dixie got another set of vitals. "He's showing increase of respiratory distress" said Mike. "Ok lets go ahead and tube him to help him breath." said Kel. Just then a nurse came in and handed Them Roy�s x-rays and lab results. After a minute or so looking at the x-rays and the lab results. Kel said. "He has some kind of internal injuries going on there, we have to open him up." He said feeling around Roy�s mid section. "Maybe his spleen or kidney." said Kel. "Right, Mike you want to assist?" "Sure Kel" said Mike. "X-rays are normal everything looks good. Nothing broken" said Joe. "Ok lets get going were running out of time. Dixie, Joanne DeSoto should be here soon tell her sorry we couldn't wait for her." said Kel. "I'll take care of her." smiled Dixie. She then lean over and kissed Roy on the cheek. "From Joanne." she said and watched as they wheeled Roy out of the room as Mike forced more air into his lungs. Dixie took a deep breath and followed behind. As they got on the elevator the door closed Dixie started towards Johnny�s room. "Dixie" came a voice behind her, she knew to well. Dixie smiled and turned "Joanne." she greeted her. "Where's Roy is he ok?" "Whoa girl you know the drill! Calm down a 2nd lets go get some coffee and talk." smiled Dixie JoAnne did as Dixie said, She took a deep breath and followed Dixie to the lounge. Joanne sat at the table and Dixie got the coffee and joined her. "Alright now what did the police department tell you?" asked Dixie. "They were dispatched to a fire. They wrecked the squad. Was Johnny driving?" asked Joanne with a very serious face. Dixie couldn't help but let a little laugh out. "No Roy was driving. I'm not sure how it happen Joanne. but they were in a brush fire area. Roy's got internal injuries plus a serious head injury, he's also at least 2 seizures so far. They have him in surgery now. Kel said he was sorry he couldn't wait for you to get here before they took Roy up. I gave him a kiss on the cheek for you." said Dixie holding Joanne�s hand. "It's ok Dixie, Kel�s with him that helps and what about Johnny?" she asked. "He's a mystery." smiled Dixie. "I can't ask you to figure out his charm, Dixie just his injuries." laughed Joanne. "Good no one knows that Gage charm. But I know he's got a broken ankle. The problem is he won't wake up and his b/p is threw the roof. We can't find anything wrong with him." said Dixie. "Can I see him?" asked Joanne. "Sure come with me." said Dixie. When they left the room they meet Dr. Early coming from Johnny�s room. "Joanne?" How you holding up?" asked Joe. "I'm ok thanks, I wanted to see Johnny, if it's ok?" she asked. "Sure maybe he'll wake up for you." said Dr. Early. "If you need anything give us a yell." said Joe. "Thanks guys she gave each one a hug and then went into the room. She walked over to where Johnny�s body laid still. she grinned at his charm. She then moved a stray piece of hair. Johnny remained still. Joanne who is usually the strong outspoken person broke down. She laid her head down on Johnny chest and began to sob." "Oh Johnny what am I going do if I loose him." she sobbed. Suddenly Joanne felt a hand on her head. "Shhh, don't talk like that. He'll be fine" came Johnny�s voice. Joanne sniffled a little and lifted her head. "Johnny?" she asked. "Yeah?" he said. "Oh Johnny," she laid her head back down on his chest. "Shhh I'm here how�s Roy?" he asked. "He's up in surgery they didn't tell me much, just that he has internal bleeding." she said. Joanne sat up and wiped her eyes "How are you feeling? You know that you have a lot of people worried about you?" she smiled. "I�m tired, I've got a headache. Where is everyone anyway?" he asked looking around. "Outside, let me tell them your awake. They are worried about you." she said and kissed him on the cheek. "I'll be right back" she smile and opened the door and went to Dixie. Joe and Dixie were there talking and going over charts. "He's awake" she smiled. "Really great he say anything?" asked Joe. "He said he was tired and had a headache and asked about Roy." she said "Ok excuse me and thanks Joanne." smile Joe. He went into the room and found Johnny sitting up on the side of the bed. "What do you think your doing?" asked Joe. "What does it look like Doc." said Johnny with a nasty tone. "Excuse me?": asked Joe taken back by the attitude. "Sorry doc, I'm sitting up. I was feeling nauseous and sitting up seemed to help some." said Johnny. "Joanne said you were tired and had a headache? How you feeling know?" asked Joe looking at Johnny's eyes. "Same" said Johnny. As Joe helped Johnny to lay back down as a nurse came in the room. "Nurse help me lift the head of this stretcher up so he can sit up. Joe lifted Johnny�s head up as the nurse raised the head of the bed. "How's that feel?" asked Joe once Johnny was settled down. "Better thanks." said Johnny. The nurse then took Johnny�s vitals again. Dixie walked in and said "Here are Johnny�s lab results and x-rays Dr. Early." Joe read the lab report and said "Well looks like your labs are normal but your ankle is broken and you do have a minor concussion." said Joe. Dixie was standing beside Johnny smiling at him. "Concussion how did I get that?" asked Johnny touching his head. "I'd say from the wreck." said Joe. "huh, must of been so worried about Roy and the fire I never noticed I'd hit my head." said Johnny smiling at Dixie holding his hand. " Your going be our guest for a few days at the least. Dixie set up to have his leg put in a cast and then take him to his room. I want you to get some rest. We'll keep you informed on Roy,." said Joe. He turned to leave the room "Hey Doc thanks" said Johnny. Joe patted Johnny on the shoulder and left the room. Joanne had waited outside the room for a report on Johnny. "How is he?" she asked "He's going be fine, he's got a concussion and broken ankle. He's having his leg set and then they'll move him to a room, if you want to go stay with him that's fine." said Joe. "Thanks Dr. Early for everything." said Joann and she went into the room. Over the next 3 hours Johnny had had his leg cast and moved to his room Joanne Desoto had stayed with him. She knew Roy would approve and she felt better when she was with Johnny. It gave her something to do besides sit in the waiting room or pacing until she heard word on Roy. Besides Johnny was a part of family he was like one of her kids. Johnny lay sleeping in his bed, when there was a slight knock at the door. Joanne got up and open the door. "Hi" she said and put a finger to her lips. "It's ok Joanne I'm awake." said Johnny. She shook her head at him. "Come on in." she said. In walked a tired and dirty Captain Stanley, Marco Lopez, Chet Kelly and Mike Stoker. "We thought we stop by before heading home." said Cap. "Is the fire under control?" she asked. "Pretty much. We've got replacements til morning. We wanted to see how you guys were doing? Where is Roy?" asked Cap worried. "He's up in surgery still he had internal bleeding." she sat back down on the chair. "How are you doing?" Capt asked Joanne. "I'm ok." she said "Joanne don't worry about the kids Beth�s got them, until you go get them. She's on vacation from work so she'll keep them till you say so." smiled Mike. "Tell her thanks for me Mike. I really appreciate her for keeping the kids for us. If they are bad you let me know." she said. "When I talked to Beth a little while ago they were making get well cards." smiled Mike. "Don't worry about them they will be fine." he said. "I know I'm sorry" she smiled back sadly. "Will you please stop that. You keep apologizing for everything." said Johnny. She started to say it again but caught herself. Just then the door open and Dr. Brackett came into the room. "Having a party in here?" he asked with Joe and Dixie close behind him. TBC |
