She flashed a smile then pointed with her pencil towards the waiting area. Turning his head in the direction of Dixie's pointing pencil Roy spotted Nicci and Joanne sitting waiting patently." Well Dix, you know how it is." Roy returned a smile " Yeah I know how it is." She mimiced Roy " Come on lets go see what that grand baby of yours is up to." She smiled again as she stood on her feet before escorting Roy over to his waiting family with Johnny close behind. " Jo, Nicci sorry I'm late, had a run about fifteen minutes before I had to leave and come here." Roy said in hopes of understanding Getting to her feet Jo turned and gave her husband a hug." Oh Roy thats okay, you dont have to be sorry I understand." she assured " Well come on, you know how cranky Kel can be, lets not keep the man waiting." Dixie smiled escorting the DeSoto family down the hall to the treatment room. With his famous crooked smile Johnny spotted a new student nurse walking down the hall. " Hey Roy I'll catch you later okay." He said as he started his persuit. Rolling his eyes upwards Roy smiled and said "Yeah Romeo, see ya later." before entering the examining room with his family Turning his head Dr. Brackett smiled." I was beginning to think I was stood up." He winked as he made an advance towards Roy and his young family. " Well now that you're here, Nicci why dont you hop up on the table and we'll begin the examination by getting a fetal heartbeat." With a chuckle Roy walked up to Nicci. " Need a hand?" He asked seeing that Nicci was having difficulty getting her pint sized body on the table. With a smile she accepted her fathers offer. Seeing that Nicci was ready Dr. Brackett walked over" Now Nicci I want you to lay back take a deep breath" He said in a soothing voice." I'd like to start by getting a fetal heart beat and then we'll get an utra sound." Feeling Dr. Brackett lift up her shirt Nicci begged " No please don't." while raising her hands she tried to stop the doctor. Seeing his daughter actions Roy took her by the hand and assured " Nicci you dont have to be scared, the doctor just wants to listen to your baby's heartbeat." Hearing her fathers words, Nicci let go of her shirt and allowed the doctor to continue. Although she tried to fight it, her body trembled as she felt the doctors hands on her. Feeling her flintch as he squirted the cold jelly on her tummy Dr. Brackett looked up, he could see the fear in her eyes as her mind recaped the memory of Roger's cold laugh when he ejected himself all over her chest and face. Seeing a single tear slide down her cheek, he was reminded that Nicci was a special case and he needed to continue with kid gloves to avoid scaring her." Nicci listen to me, I have to check you to ensure that you and your baby is safe and healthy. I'm not going to hurt you, you have to trust me okay Sweety" His voice was soothing as he gently wiped her tear. Seeing that Nicci was still struggling Roy soothed." It's okay Nicci, please try to calm down." Then reaching over, he placed his hand on her head and after using slow relaxing movements repeatedly he could see that his actions were successful. With that thought he looked at Brackett and with a nod of his head he allowed him to continue the exam. " Hear that Nicci? thats your baby's heartbeat." His voice full of pride as he to listened to the steady rhythm. "A very strong heartbeat, just what I like to hear." Dr. Brackett said pleased with the heart rate." Well shall we see what the little guys up to now?" He smiled Looking at the screen in fascination, Roy smiled at the sight of his grand baby. His eyes filled with tears of joy for he knew that that baby was a part of him and regardless of the circumstances he was looking forward to his grand child " Look Jo, look Nicci, there he is." Roy said planting a kiss on his daughter's cheek. " That's a baby? it looks more like a green blob to me." She said with her innocent girl charm." Tell me it ain't going to look like that Jo." " Oh no Nicci all babies look like that inside the mother. It's completely normal." Joanne assured with a smile. " So doc is he okay? When is the due date?" " He's just fine." He said finishing the exam. Then sitting on a stool he quickly scanned the results, " You're about twelve weeks along so as far as the due date, I would have to say in the neighborhood of around Janurary 18th, Of course since the last period can't accurately be determined I have to go by measurements and how much weight is gained during pregnancy." Then standing up Dr. Brackett went over to the medicine cabinet. Taking out a small bottle he then walked up to Nicci who was now in a sitting position." Now according to the last time you were weighed you were a little over fifteen pounds under weight, I would like for you to gain at least five pounds a month to make up for what you are lacking now. Also I want you to take one of these everyday, they're vitamins and it will help give you back nutrients that the baby will take away. Also these will help." He added as he handed Nicci a stack of pamphlets." Well that's about it, I would like to see you again in about one month, and I want you to weight about one hundred pounds okay." He ended with a smile " Okay doc, thanks." Roy said. ......... Watching as Roy entered the dayroom with a certain spring in his step Captain Stanley greeted." Can I assume everything went okay at Rampart with Nicci?" " Everything went perfect Capt., you should see him, he's about that big." Roy said with a smile as he estimated the size between his figure and thumb. " Doc says he's got a strong heartbeat and he should be here Janurary 18th." He announced excited with the news. Then seeing his chance Chet spoke." So this means you'll be retiring Roy?" " Retiring what do you mean Chet? I'm not going to retire, why do you think I'm retiring?" Roy said " Well I just thought it would be kind of hard, I mean I can just see you running up to a fire with the fire hose in one hand and your cane in the other. I'd be afraid you might trip over the cain and break a hip." Chet teased " Ain't that right Grandpa." " Hey I know maybe we can wheel him up to the fire in a wheel chair, I'm sure we can borrow one from Rampart." Johnny chuckled with his statement. " Oh yeah you guys are a million laughs aren't you. Come on just get serious would ya." Roy said coming to his defence. Listening to his men, Captain said." You two lets not joke at Roy's exspense, he wouldn't do it to you two, and you two shouldn't do it to him. This is a very important time in his life." Then looking at his crew he smiled." Becides you two are both wrong we'll be carrying him up to the fire.." He ended sending everyone into laughter. .......two days later......... Standing in the door way of the DeSoto kitchen Roy studied his family, Joanne standing at the stove and Jenny and Chris sitting at the table with a bowl of cereal As he listened he could hear the delightful conversation they were having about the cereal box. Seeing her husband Joanne walked up " Good morning." She greeted as she reached up and gave him a kiss ." How'd you sleep?" " I slept better then I have in a long time. Where's Nicci?" He wondered " Oh she's still in bed. Poor girl she's whipped after these last couple days." " Yeah, I know but at least she can now put it all behind her and move on with her future. The money will certainly help." " Yes it will." Joanne agreed just as she spotted Nicci in front of the basement stairs." Morning sleepy head." Joanne then stopped as she notice the look on her face." Honey what's wrong, tummy bothering you?" She asked " Yeah a little but I'm okay." She said as she slowly made it to the table." Hey dad, you got to work today?" " Yeap, sure do." He said " Oh well do you think I can go to the station with you?" She asked hopefull " I dont see a problem with it, but why? I thought you would want to stay home and rest." Standing up she reached into the front pocket of her jeans and pulled out a rather large sum of money. Sitting it on the table she then sat back down." There's almost a thousand dollars there." " Nicci, I dont understand where did you get that?" Roy asked just as stunned as Joanne was " It came from you dad, it's all the money you sent me for my birthdays and Christmas. It would be a lot easier if I already had a bank account before I receive the settlement. And since the bank that you and Jo uses is close to the station I figure that if I go with you I can walk over and be there when they open." She finished. Listening to his daughter's well thought out plan he first look at Joanne as she stood there smiling. With a smile all his own he smiled and said" Honey I'd be more then happy to take you with." TBC |
