Standing in front of the sink Johnny watched as Roy swiftly walked to the coffee pot. " Morning pally, looks like your in a good mood."Johnny greeted " I am." Roy said smiling as he took a seat with the rest of his friends " So tell us, how's Nicci doin? she's about four months along isn't she?" Mike asked. " She's doing great and actually she's closer to four and a half months." Roy corrected." According to her last check up, Brackett says she and the baby are fine. She's doesn't weigh as much as he'd like her to, but he thinks she'll make it up towards the end of the pregnancy. She even started going back to school, she said she wanted to get as much school behind her as she could before the baby comes." " Sounds like she's really trying hard. I know Sherry says she's trying in school and that the other students are being a lot nicer to her. She says Nicci cant walk in the hall without a dozen kids saying hi to her. They even fight over who Nicci's going to sit with at lunch." Captain Stanley said with a sence of happiness for the DeSoto family. " I dont know about you Roy, but it sounds like our daughter's have become good friends. Seems where one is, the other isn't to far away. Did you know that they spent two hours on the phone last night?" " Yeah I know, but what I cant figure out is what could they possibly have to talk about when they just saw each other in school." Roy chuckled " I don't know, but what do you exspect they're teenage girls and......" Captain Stanley started just as the klaxons sounded sending the squad out on a run. Within just a few minutes the engine crew was greeted by Nicci standing in the door way. " Hi Nicci." he greeted. " Hi Uncle Hank." She returned while walking deeper into the room then taking her seat next to Chet. As the guys watched Nicci, they could now see the distinctive pudge of her growing belly. It was this fact that made it clear that they would soon have a new member in their exstended family. " So where's Sherry? I know you two cant be to far apart for to long." Stanley teased knowing how close the girls really were. " Oh she's in the bathroom." Nicci answered " That's funny, you're the one who's always in the latrine." Chet joked cutting Nicci a smile " Your real cute aren't ya Uncle Chet." She stated while playfully slapping Chet on the arm just as Roy and Johnny walked in followed by Sherry Walking up behind his daughter Roy greeted." Hi Nicci "Then giving her a peck on the cheek. Taking a seat he asked." How you feeling?" " I'm okay dad." She said looking at Sherry with a grin. She remembered the conversation they were having and how Nicci confessed to Sherry that Roy was driving her nuts by asking her how she was everyday. Then getting the feeling that it was her turn to use the latrine she stood up and quickly left the room. " So when are you going to start changing the basement around?" Johnny asked taking his seat next to his partner. " Well the contractor said that his company can start the work next week. He said that because there's a gradual slant to the south end of the house, that would be a good place for the entrance way and a picture window." " Sounds exspensive." Captain Stanley remarked as he remembered the time he added on to his house. " It will be very exspensive about 8,000 dollars worth. They'll have to jack the house up off the foundation in order to do the work. We'll simply have to take out a second morgage. " Roy said with a hint of dread. " Well you know, we have Friday off , we can do the nursery. With us working together, it shouldn't take more then a day." Johnny said "And it would be a lot cheaper then having the work contracted." " Yeah I know, I'm not so worried about the nursery costing. The other work is what's going to cost." " How much is it going to cost?" Nicci asked hearing the last words that her dad spoke. Then dropping back down in the chair next to Chet she asked again. "Well dad how much?" " You really want to know, about 9,000 dollars all said and done. " Roy answered Hearing her father's voice coated with worry she offered " I can pay for it dad." She offered to her father. " No Nicci, I can't let you do that." Roy refused with pride. He couldn't bare the thought of Nicci paying for the work. " Why not dad?" She wanted to know " Because Nicci, that's your money." Roy said as fact. Then seeing the disappointment in his daughters eyes he added." Hey don't worry about, it'll all work out. I'll just have to work more overtime . All you need to worry about is you and that baby. Let me worry about everything else." " More overtime dad?" She miniced her father." How much more over time? you already pull overtime. It seems the only time I see you is when I come here for a visit. But what about Chris and Jenny dad? they need you too." She stated standing her ground. " Now look here Nicci, I appreciate what your saying but......." Roy started " No dad you look." She interupted her father by raising her voice and slapping the table getting the attention of everyone in the room " I'm not going to stand by and watch you work your ass into the ground for me. I know there's shelters out there and I'll go to one before I let you do that. Besides Roger's the fucking idiot that got me in this mess, let him pay for the shit." She ended with purpose as she got up and left the room. Witnessing her words, Chet looked at Roy and teased." You know as I sit here I can't help but comment, buddy you just lost that fight miserably." "Yeah." Roy agreed he knew that somewhere along the way she got the better of him. Although he didn't know how she did it, it was clear that he didn't stand a chance. " Man she sure don't hold back punches does she?" Johnny said smiling at the notion that a girl her age could get the better of a grown man twice her age. " Nope." Roy simply said. " Well why should she?" Stoker asked." She is a DeSoto isn't she?" .......The next morning........ Sitting around the table after a somewhat busy shift Roy waited for his son Chris to finish his breakfast. Seeing that he was a quarter of the way done Roy spoke." Chris I'm going to need your help today. I want to move everything out of the pantry so it's ready for tomorrow." " Awe, but dad there's got to be a million can goods, it'll take all day and I was going to go to the ball field with the guys." Chris stated " Listen to your father Chris, Nicci needs that room for the baby." Joanne said." Besides with all of us working together it shouldn't take more then a couple hours." Putting up an argument Chris said" Yeah but, I don't see why I got to do it." Roy couldn't hide the fact that he was getting upset listening to Chris going against his wishes. Taking his place as the man of the house Roy spoke sternly to his son. " Now Christopher Lee, your not being very nice to your sister. You know she cant do the work herself and I don't need to remind you that her life wasn't filled with lolly pops and bubble gum like yours and Jenny's was. " " I know,I know but it's still not fair, it's Nicci's kid and........." Chris said with a hint of attitude. " Now that will do young man.I don't want to hear another word about it." Joanne scolded Getting upset with his parents and the situation, Chris raised his voice." I WISHED NICCI WOULD HAVE NEVER CAME HERE. I WISHED SHE WOULD JUST DISAPPEAR FOREVER." Then getting to his feet Chris stomped to his room slamming the door shut behind him. Leaning against his closed bedroom door he looked up to the ceiling." I wished she would just die." He said in anger ........... The next morning......... Hearing comotion on the other side of her door Nicci awoke, Then hearing the familiar voice of her Uncle Johnny, she set out her search. Opening the door she was greeted by the sight of her father on one end of a large piece of dry wall while Johnny had a hold on the other. " Morning Nic." Chet said as he made his way past her on his way to what would soon be her baby's room. " Mornin." She returned Then seeing her Uncle Hank leaning up against the wall she asked. " Hey Uncle Hank, where's Sherry? did she come with you?" " Nope, she was still in bed when I left." He answered. Hearing Captain Stanley's answer Nicci said. "Oh yeah, well maybe I'll just have to give her a call and have her get her little ass over here." She chuckled at her words as headed for the phone. After making her quick phone call, Nicci went into her room to get dressed. While waiting for Sherry, Nicci walked into her small partially stocked kitchen and made a pot of coffee. Then walking towards the hard working men she said " Hey..." She started to announce but stopped when she noticed Chet's back side muscles pertruding from his washed out pair of jeans. Turning his head to the sound of her voice Roy asked." Yeah Nicci, What'd you want? you okay?" " Yeah, I'm fine, I...I just wanted to tell you that.....that I made a pot of coffee for you." She stuttered out while turning her head towards her father trying to ignore the sight in front of her. " Oh okay, sounds good, thanks." Roy said As she turned she said to herself" Uniform pants just dont do the man justice." She chuckled. Then shaking her head, she headed upstairs to wait for Sherry. .......Eight hours later......... With the work complete the crew at Station 51 sat out in the DeSoto's back yard waiting for the supper to arrive from the local pizza place. While they sat visiting, both Nicci and Sherry had a conversation all their own. Then walking up to her dad, Sherry asked." Hey dad, do you think it would be okay if me and Nicci went to the movies tomorrow? They're playing the The Monster that ate Manhatten." " Oh man they're playing, The Monster that ate Manhatten?" Chet repeated Sherry's words." Man I love that movie. The part where the monster's eyes fall out of his head and puss and slime ooze out of the sockets." He stated while running his fingers down his face as a way of gesture. "Great flick, man I wished I didn't have to work, I'd go too." Sitting next to Chet, Nicci added " Yeah thats a cool part, but I like it when the monster starts picking up all the people and starts eating them like popcorn. Then the part where a guys head falls off and starts rolling down the street." She laughed " You two are sick." Captain Stanley said shaking his head as his mind played the two sences in his head. " And you two want to see that?" " Yeah so Dad, can we go?" Sherry asked Although the chosen movie wasn't his first choice to have his daughter see he knew that she was old enough.
