At the DeSoto home, Joanne stood at the sink finishing the supper dishes when the phone rang. " Hello, DeSoto residence." She spoke while drying her hands on a dish towel. " Oh hi Betty..... yes he's here, hold on a minute." Holding the phone away Jo called for Roy. " Roy, Betty's on the phone." Taking the phone Roy spoke. " Hello...... I see, well do you know where she might go?................................ " Roy asked worriedly. " Well call me if you hear anything. I'll be working tomorrow and the next day. You can call me there, the number is area code 862-555-5500.......... okay you too....." Roy ended " Roy what did Betty want?" Joanne asked seeing her husband's face coated with worry " She wanted to call me and tell me that Nicci didn't come home after school. No one has seen her since this morning." He said as his supper started moving upwards to his throat. " Oh no Roy I'm sorry." Jo said taking her husband in her arms. " I dont know what to do Jo, I mean according to Betty's last letter, Nicci's really gotten out of control and very unruly. She sneaks out at night doing God knows what. I know she's been picked up by the police more then once. It's been so bad Jo, that Betty is actually scared of her. Nicci screams at her and calls her horrible names." " Do you think Nicci would ever hit Betty?" Jo asked concerned for the situation. " I dont know, Honey I just dont know" Roy conluded pulling Joanne closer ............ Two Days Later........ For the past two days, the crew at Station 51 studied Roy. They could see that something had Roy really worried by the look on his face. Without a word Roy got up from the table and headed to the bay. As soon as Roy was out of ear shot all eyes went to Johnny." You know anything about that Pal?" Captain Stanley asked looking at Johnny " Nope, he's been like that for two days. I went over to his house last night and it was so quiet you could hear a pin drop." Johnny said "Maybe he and Jo had a fight." Chet suggested just as the phone rang " Station 51, Captain Stanley, Can I help you?" Stanley announced into the reciever. "........... Roy yes he's working, hold on." Cupping the receiver with his palm he looked over to Johnny. " Hey Gage you want to go get Roy? He's got a long distance call from Mississippi." " Sure." Johnny said as he left the room " Capt who would be calling Roy from Mississippi?" Mike asked " I dont know. it's a woman and she seems upset." Taking the receiver from his Captain Roy spoke." Hello......... shhhh its okay Betty, calm down and tell me what happened........ I see well where's Nicci?............... Is she okay?" Roy asked over her sobs. All without warning he could hear Nicci's voice in the back ground screaming at her mother. He could hear every hateful and hurtful word coming out of Nicci. Then pulling the receiver from his ear he stood there as the steady stream of cuss words coming from Nicci became louder followed by rattleing and a sudden banging of the phone......" Betty you okay?" Roy asked being able to hear skin to skin contact mixing with the sound of whimpers coming from Betty. " Betty answer me." Roy started only to be interupted by the silence of a dead silence coming from the other end. With the words from Nicci still echoing in his head Roy felt helpless. He wanted to change the situation but he didn't know how. Did Nicci hit her mother? He wondered as he hung up the phone. Slowly walking over to the table with his head down, he realized that Nicci was no longer the blonde haired blue eyed happy go lucky child that he use to know. Cutting Roy a grin Chet walked up and playfully patted Roy on the back " Roy having a girl friend in Mississippi, who would have guessed. I had no idea. Tell me how many more chicks you got scattered around." He teased. " Knock it off Kelly." Johnny said in defence. He could see that the phone call was hard on his partner and friend by the way he carried himself. " Gee, I was just kidding, but it's no wonder him and Jo are fighting." Chet continnued. Taking offence of Chet's words Roy looked up. " Chet you dont know what your talking about and for your information, things couldn't be better with me and Jo." " Well then who was that on the phone, your long lost aunt?" Chet asked " I dont' think it's none of your business, now shut up about it." Roy said while turning to leave the room not giving Chet another chance to open his mouth. TBC |
