Watching Roy as he walked over to the coffee pot, it was clear to the men in the room that something was bothering him. His face held the look of fustration. They knew that the past week was taking it's toll on Roy. " Hey Roy, How's it going pal?" Captain Stanley greeted watching Roy as he slowly sunk in a chair. " Pretty good I guess." Roy lied hanging his head. Then deciding it was a good idea to leave the room before his friends picked up on his deception. Knowing that Johnny and Roy were like brothers and that Johnny often joined the DeSoto family for supper. Captain Stanley asked " Gage you know anything about that?" " Yeah I do," Johnny said still haunted by the remnants that was left over from his visit at the DeSoto home three days ago. " You want to let us in on it? Stanley asked. " Capt. it's really bad over there. I mean Roy cant even talk to Nicci with out her spouting off to him." Johnny started."The other night I went over for supper and all was good until Roy asked Nicci to pass the salt."Johnny ended " Well what happened?" Chet wanted to know " All hell broke loose, that's what happened. Roy and her got into a huge fight. Jo took the kids in the other room because she was scared that it was going to get physical. Then as if that wasn't bad enough, shit totally hit the fan when she told him she hated him." Johnny stopped to take a breath before continuing." Needless to say Roy sent her to her room without supper. Man I thought Roy was really going to loose it. " Johnny stopped still having a hard time with the memory."Guys, I've never seen anything like it. You know me, I do my share of cussing but the things that flew out of her mouth that night even made me blush. " Johnny concluded seeing Roy walk back into the room " Junior I'm sorry about the other night." Roy apologized " No problem Pally, it's not like you had anything to do with it. All you asked for was the salt." Hey Roy, Sherry tells me she has Nicci in her science and gym class." Stanley said." In fact Sherry was telling me that they are partners in a science project for their final." " Who knows, maybe Sherry's good influence will help with Nicci's bad attitude." Chet said with a glimmer of hope. Although Chet's words were hard on Roy, he also understood. He knew that her attitude was bad and that everyone in the room knew it as well as he did. " I hope your right. For once I would like to just sit down and have a conversation with her biting my head off." " Well just give it some time, its only been a week and it's going to take some adjustment on her part." Stanley said. " Just remember if you need to talk...." Just as the klaxons sounded .............. After spending half the the shift at a large stucture fire , The crew at station 51 were finally able to relax and get a late lunch. The only noise were the sounds of forks scrapping acrossed plates until the sound of Sherry's greeting interupted. Looking up a smile found Captain Stanley's face as he spotted his daughter standing there. " Hey there."as he got to his feet." What are you doing here?" Walking over Sherry took her father in for a hug. Then reaching up she gave him a gentle kiss on the cheek." Hi daddy."She smiled. "I thought I and Nicci would stop by and talk to you about our project for science class." Hearing his daughter's name Roy glanced up to find Nicci standing just inside the doorway.Getting to his feet he greeted" Hi Nicci." Then stepping closer he just like the others picked up the somewhat disturbed look on her face as well as the fresh stench of cigarette smoke. It was obvious to Roy what she had been doing but deciding to avoid any outbursts he thought it best not to press her." Nicci have a seat. Sherry says you and her are working on a science project." Not hearing a responce from Nicci, Sherry spoke. "Yes Uncle Roy, I and Nicci are doing a report on fire safety. And I thought we could use the display you and Uncle Johnny used when you were on the talk show that one time." " Yeah sure , you can use it." Roy said with a sence of pride. " Hey you know what, if it works out and if I and Johnny can get cleared we can stop by." Roy suggested while watching Nicci plop down in a chair . " Really Uncle Roy, that would be great." Sherry said with a smile" What do you think Nicci?" " You want to know what I think? I think the whole idea is stupid and I aint doing it." She refused" If you want to waste your time fine by me but I aint doing shit." Taken back by Nicci's crude remarks, Roy took a seat on the corner of the table so that he was facing his young daughter " No, I'll tell you what's stupid and that's smoking." Roy started"And I dont think your old enough to realize the dangers of smoking." " I dont care." Nicci said. " I know you dont care and you see thats a real problem." Roy said, his voice lined with softeness with a touch of firmness. " I dont know what's going on in that head of yours, but you if you think for one second I'm going to sit here and watch you slowly kill yourself by smoking then you are very much mistaken." Roy said " Fuck you, you cant tell me what to do." Nicci blurted out With her words Roy blew." Dammit Nicci, I am you father and you will listen to me." "NO YOUR NOT!!!" Nicci screamed jumping out of her seat as if it was on fire . " YOUR NOT MY DAD,YOUR NOTHING BUT A SPERM DONOR. AND AS FAR AS KILLING MYSELF I'M AFRAID SMOKING WOULD TAKE TO LONG. IF I DID WANT TO KILL MYSELF, I'D BLOW MY FUCKING HEAD OFF."She ended startling everyone in the room with her firery words " Nicci." Roy started only to be interupted by Nicci's hand going up as if to block his words. Then watching as she left the room. With her harsh words the others looked at Roy, his face had the look of someone who had just lost someone. This look was pain. TBC |
