Hey where's Cap?" Johnny wondered " Oh, the County Supervisor stopped in for a visit." " Hello." Nicci spoke walking through the bay stopping in the doorway of the day room Johnny turned around to the sound of her voice." Hey Half Pint, what are you doing here?" Johnny asked with a smile " I had a job interview down the street and since I have a little over an hour to kill waiting for the city bus, I thought I would stop in and say hi." Nicci said " Well you look real nice." Johnny said seeing that she was dredded in a t- lengh floral print skirt with a matching vest and beige blouse. " Well thank you, but to be honest I haven't worn so much fabric all at once in a very long time. It's a good thing I brought a change of clothes with me. Is here someplace I can change?" " Sure, right this way my dear." Johnny said leading her to the locker room " Boy she shines up like a new penny don't she?" Chat remarked " She sure does." Roy agreed ............. " Okay just let me call my house mam and her know that I wont be home for supper." Walking into the dorm, Nicci placed a quick call. " Well she said it was okay." Nicci said walking over to the door. " This is David Meyers the County Supervisor and this in Nicci Rogers." Stanley introduced. Feeling unsure of the situation Nicci looked down to the floor. " Hi." she whispered " Hello." Meyers said noticing the needle scars on her arms. Sencing trouble, Captain stood up and pulled out a seat." Nicci why don't you join us for lunch?" he asked trying to ease the tension in the room Johnny sitting next to her, he could see that Meyers was making her unconfortable by the way he kept looking at her." Nicci please try to eat something." Johnny said sliding his hand over hers. Without a word Nicci took the med box out of her pocket and poured the four pills out in her palm Just then the Klaxons sounded." I don't know how else to say this so I'll just get to the point. While I don't mind visitors at any of my stations, I still think it's important for us to keep our standards high. Do you understand Ms. Rogers?" Meyers asked, As the others looked up shocked by his rude statement " Yeah I think I understand." She said " Good just so you do understand that I don't think you are dressed appropriately to be here, I would exspect you to choose more suitable attire the next time you come for a visit. And I would appreciate it if you covered up your track marks on your arms. We do have an image to protect. I do not want nor will I tolerate Junkies hanging around at any of my stations. Have I made myself clear?" Meyers said sternly. Feeling very small, Nicci looked around the table then hung her head. Without a word Nicci walked out of the room being followed by the Captain. Feeling the Captain put his firm hand on her she flinched. " Nicci are you okay?" Stanley asked worriedly feeling her body shake under his touch Nicci looked up to Stanley with teary eyes." I'm fine don't you worry." Nicci lied giving him a fake smile " You want to talk?" Stanley asked seeing the pain in her eyes Looking down at the ground." There's nothing to talk about Mr. Stanley he's right I don't belong here." Nicci said rubbing her tear streaked face. " Now you know that's not true. You do belong here Nicci." Stanley soothed " No, he's right you don't need junkies hanging around here and that's what I am, Mr. Stanley a junkie." Nicci whispered truning to leave " Nicci please stay." Stanley begged " No Mr. Stanley I've never been the kind to stay where I'm not wanted." Nicci cried walking to the door. " Well where are you going to go? Is there anything you want me to tell Gage?" Captain asked concerned for her. " Tell him anything and don't ask me where I'm going cause I wont know till I get there." Nicci bursted out in tears before leaving With sadness, Stanley walked back into the day room. Then dropping in a chair he looked over at his crew and then at the Supervisor. Seeing the concern wash his Captains face Chet asked." is she going to be okay?" " I don't know she's pretty upset and hurt." Stanley said giving up on trying to hide his concern " Well I'm sorry, Hank but as long as I'm the Supervisor that's the way it will be, Now if you'll excuse me I'll be going." Meyers said getting up from the table to leave Roy and Johnny walked into the day room one hour later. As Roy and Johnny took their seats at the table they could sence something was wrong." I don't know how to say this but I think Nicci's headed for trouble. After you two left the Supervisor said some pretty rotten things to her. He said that she didn't belong here and he basically called her a junkie and said that he didn't want her kind hanging around. When she left she was crying. I tried to stop her but she was very upset." Feeling his world collapse " Oh no." Johnny said hanging his head still hearing his Captain's words. Roy watched as the concern danced on his partners face." Did she say where she was going?" He asked worriedly " No but she said that he was right when he called her a junklie." " Damn it." Johnny cursed " Well maybe she's at the half way house." Chet suggested " I hope so." Johnny said walking over to the phone. ............. After hanging up the phone Johnny walked back to the table sinking deep in his chair." This is not good." Johnny said in a whisper Seeing that his partner was very concerned Roy walked up and sat down next to him." What did you find out?" " She was there, from what Mrs. Patterson said she picked up what looked like a large sum of money. When she asked her what she was doing Nicci said she was going to visit some old friends. Mrs. Patterson said that she looked like she'd been crying. She was shaking guys." Johnny said worriedly " God I hope she's not relapsing." Stanley said worriedly " Yeah she hasn't been clean very long, it wouldn't take much." Marco concluded " I know Paster Daniels told me that one wrong word or set back could throw her in complete relapse." " It's just not fair, she's busted her ass to get where she is and for what." Chet exploded leaving the room ........ Four hours have past and still Johnny didn't know where Nicci was." Hey don't worry Junior , she's okay." Roy soothed " I wish I could believe that." Johnny said looking at Roy his face etched with worry " Hey Gage you have a phone call, It's Mrs. Patterson." Captain announced Johnny jumped out of his seat and ran over to the phone, while the others gathered around waiting for any news. " Hello." Johnny spoke into the phone. " I see..... " Well what happens now?" Roy asked " If she doesn't show up in twenty four hours the police will be called." Another hour and a half have past and Johnny was past the point of worry Not knowing where Nicci was or what she was doing was killing him. He didn't like the thought of her throwing everything that she had worked so hard to get. Just then the door bell rang. " Gage someone's here to see you." Stanley said with a grin Johnny looked up and saw Nicci standing there next to his Captain. Springing out of his chair he took Nicci in his arms." Thank God." Johnny said holding her tight." Where have you been I've been worried sick about you. when Cap told me what happened I thought you......Then I called Mrs. Patterson and she said you were gong to visit some old friends." Johnny said still embracing her. " Johnny." Nicci started pulling away from him." Johnny I'm sorry I made you worry and I'm sorry I left the way I did." She said looking at the Captain then back at Johnny. " I just needed some space, so I walked around a bit. I was going to go shopping thats why I went to the half way house to get some dough. But instead of going shopping I found myself at the zoo feeding the ducks. Yes I did go visit some old friends but I didn't do anything." Nicci said." Johnny did you think I was going back?" " Yeah I did." " Johnny you don't have to worry, I don't want to go back to that way of life. not now not ever. I know what that kind of life was doing to me and I'm not going back. Now I can't lie to you the thought was there, But Johnny there's no reason to go back not when I got you in my life." Nicci concluded TBC |
