Kirk Memorial History Continued |
Rev, Joseph Howe Kirk was the longest serving clergy , being minister to the pastoral charge for twenty-two years (1913-1935). When the Presbyterian Church in Canada moved to unite with the Congregationalist and Methodist churches, a vote was taken at Glenelg and a slim majority voted for a stronger church. Thus the property, building and its contents became the possession of the United Church of Canada. The old name Glenelg Church was used until 1935 when the church was renamed "Kirk Memorial United" in honor of the minister who had served faithfully as pastor for 22 years. Also in 1935, Rev. Kirk was made Pastor Emertius and he received his Doctor of Divinity degree. |
