Yami no Matsuei Review (Series)

by Emerald

Based on manga by Yohko Matsushita, published in magazine "Hana to Yume".

Rating: PG-13 to R

Description: Dramatically beautiful

The story focuses on the Shinigamis (gods of death), mainly Asato Tsuzuki. For more information background and such, here are some useful sites:

This is one series that managed to strike the balance between angst, drama, mystery, horror and a dash of humor. The bishounen cast is an added plus.

The characters were particularly interesting, and very well portrayed. I loved their in-depth exploration, giving adequate emphasis on the main characters, but at the same time following their relationships with each other. I can say that they truly made the most out of those thirteen episodes. The pacing was quick, yet it was not difficult to understand. I had no background on Yami no Matsuei whatsoever when I watched the anime, but there was little, if any confusion.

The plot becomes more intense as it progresses, more mysterious, as if building up to a very grand climax. It did not disappoint.

Wonderful art, as well. The characters are well drawn. I simply adore the scenes where Tsuzuki summons Suzaku, Touda or Byakko. Very powerful, bordering on ethereal. Worth screencapping, I'll put some of the caps here some time. ;p

The instrumental music adds a haunting feeling to certain scenes. "The Devil's Trill" was enchantingly hair-raising. The opening song reminds me of the Fushigi Yuugi theme, for some reason. Maybe it's just me...

Those of the *very* weak of heart might want to shut their eyes at certain amounts of blood and gore. What can I say? Muraki has a deliciously twisted sense of humor, eh? But this is not recommended for family viewing, unless your family enjoys bloody detective stories and yaoi. ^o^

On the whole, I highly recommend Yami no Matsuei for yaoi and non-yaoi fans alike. The focus is not on romance, rather on the characters and their fears. Sweet ending, with just enough hanging for more.
