The Old Edwardians/St Enda's Eagles Diplomacy Championships

The Old Edwardian club and the St Enda's Eagles promoted this tournament in order to encourage the devlopment of Diplomacy in South Africa. Unfortunately, the tournament was arranged only a few days after the start of the school year began, and the Eagles were unable to field a significant team! It was played over two rounds, with some players playing in one, some in two rounds, with the best score counting. Scoring was according to the C-Diplo system. Games were played to 3 hours.
Many players were playing their first game ever! Order writing protocols were certainly an issue, but by the second round, interpretations were much stricter, and this augurs well for the future. As a development tournament the GMs accepted anything unambiguous, reminding players of the proper form.
With so many novices, play was pretty chaotic, but certainly was exhilirating! No room for care-bears here! Some novices realsied only deep into the game that the stab is not only possible in Diplomacy, but almost de rigeur!
The Old Guard, in the form of Scott Sutherland and Colin Webster showed their years of experience, but Richard Ligault stunned with his novice performance. Most players came away with great interest in playing again, and some new theories about how to go about it! The less said about my own performance, the better! Suffice it to say that if Thomas Huang ever deigns to talk to me - he has the coldest shoulder in the business - I'd say to him "cherchez L'Anglais!", and stay out of my Med! Players need to realise that they need to do well, but also to stop anyone going for the solo!
