Philippine Oil Prices Economy Breaker

It's fascinating, this oil price story is. Fascinating in a not so good way. Most Filipinos won't even dare put a positive word right next to it. Who could blame them?

I'm no historian or expert market analyst, but one only needs to walk down memory lane to figure out how everything with oil - prices, regulation and governance has gone totally out of control. Back in college if I remember correctly, it was around P22 per liter (little over a quarter gallon). I could still remember the simple joys of being able to drive along the provincial side of Bulacan. Fast forward to 2003, gas prices have increased close to P40 a liter. A dreadful hint of more bad things to come. Not long after small and medium-sized economies begin increasing their prices, trying desperately to avoid being pulled under. In all these price hikes of course, everybody ends up losers. Daily commuting cost to work went up P30, as transportation expenses nearly doubled. A friend narrates that a month's worth of grocery (for his family of five) has climbed to a record-high of 4000Php. Much of the things he enjoyed had to be cut down.

Now five laters, we're still trapped inside that bad dream. Oil prices still going up. I hear gas prices (unleaded) are now close to P60 per liter, if it's not there already. And yes I know, it's a nightmare that everyone around the world experiences. Sadly, some people feel a tighter grip than others.

I guess my real question here is about governance and regulation. Where is our government amidst this crisis? We already know where we, the everyday citizens, are in this play and what our role is. That is to struggle to survive. (Cont.)

Remote Assistance Error - A program has not started

(Excerpt from my post on another PC Help thread.)

"Hi! I just noticed that this thread pulled up on top of the Search Results when I looked for the solution to this problem.

I know the thread is stale, but if anyone comes across this, here's the solution to the issue:

After several failed trial attempts with Services, starting and stopping 'Remote' services, configuring exceptions on the Firewall, and enabling Solicited Remote Assistance in GPedit, I finally stumbled on the solution with the Events Viewer. Checking on the error logs on the Application section revealed that the HelpAssistant is missing or not started causing the Remote Assistance to fail.

Restart the computer. Go to Safe Mode (F8). And from there Run > sessmgr -service

This should start the program/ service again. If it fails you need to look at those things I mentioned at the start of the resolution."

Road to SLI: Building a system with what's available in the Philippines

If you are a long time gamer like me, upgrading to SLI should be one of your top things to do early this year. What's SLI? If you're new to SLI you can check out www.slizone.com for a quick tech intro. The basic idea is, on a single system you are able to effectively leverage graphics performance by adding together multiple GPUs. Sounds very dual-core like isn't?

This Blog Applies To:

PC Gamers (mostly performance and extreme types)

Philippine setting (as most if not all hardware taken into context are based within the country, or citing more specifically two places: Gilmore and Greenhills where I personally go to outfit my PCs)

Resolution

To build your very own SLI-compliant gaming rig is no easy task. There are several considerations that you should careful weave through before departing with your gold stash. Being just an average player in this evolving technology it is not my purpose to give an in-depth guide of how to set up SLI for anyone in general. Truthfully I was simply going to write down for myself a list of SLI-ready hardware in the Phil. market and cover the stores that sell them.

So what considerations was I referring to? There's the basics of course - like your need and your budget then there's the tech aspect of it.

What you need for SLI: motherboard**, SLI-ready GPUs

**not all boards are created with "scalable link interface" in mind. The least you want is to buy (2) Php15000 PCI-express cards and waste all that because you forgot about the SLI-ready board.

For the SLI video cards, NVIDIA the 'creator' of this technology provides a neat chart for easy reference. (Check this http://www.slizone.com/object/slim_help_gpu.html). GPUs starting with the GeForce 6600 to the mind-blowing 8800 Ultra are SLI-ready. Again, decide based on your need. The simple thumb rule is "SLI PCs must use matching GeForce Models. The manufacturer, clock speeds and memory size can vary."

That wasn't so hard to figure out - just get the same GPU models and plug it into the SLI mobo and bam. For more questions regarding SLI setup (e.g. can I match cards from different vendors?) you can use this FAQ page (http://www.slizone.com/page/slizone_faq).

Finally after all that here's the real purpose of why I wrote this blog - the list of available SLI video cards and motherboards in Manila and the stores that sell them. (This list is very prelimary! Please add to them through the comments section):
