Tohru Honda is a sixteen years old high school girl. She is an innocent and very cheerful girl even though she faces many hardships. Her mother died in a car accident, while her father died of pneumonia.

Since then, she had been adopted by her grandfather. One day she had to leave her grandfather's house for some time as her grandfather's family was moving in and the house was being remodelled.

She built a tent to stay for the night but then she coincidentally met Souma family members, some which were also her class-mates. They offered her a room at their house in exchange for cooking and cleaning. She accepted the offer and found it a pleasure to be with the Souma.

Soon after the remodel of the house had finished, she went back to live in her grandfather's house along with her other relatives. Sadly they treated her as a burden that every little word they said would be piercing to the heart.

She later decided to live at the house of the Souma family after incidents that happen later in the anime. There, she really found her home. A place where she can be accepted and feel safe. Her arrival brought many positive benefits to the members of the family.
