X-NEWS JAMAICA (Text) The highly controversial statues at Emancipation Park in Kingston are still stirring controversy and controversial actions. A Kingston motorist who was stopped to be ticketed by a police officer on Knutsford Boulevard last week was 'saved' by the two naked statues. According to a first hand report, the lady driver had turned from Oxford Road onto Knutsford Boulevard at the intersection by the statues, but was stopped by a police officer in front of the LIguanea club and told to produce her documents as she was being ticketed for crossing an unbroken white line. The lady handed over her documents which were all in order, and while waiting for the officer to examine then, she confessed to him that she so detested the statues' nudity she always avoided driving past them. She had succeeded in this determination for several months, but on this particular day she was late for a meeting in New Kingston and the traffic had prevented her from driving any other route. As she was telling the officer that her bad luck was proof of the bad obeah of the statues, he stopped writing the ticket and told her she could go without further delay or a ticket. Asked why, the officer said he too disliked the statues and further explained that he was especially disgusted because the statues had become a homosexual meeting place late at night. "Just the other night we (police) had to beat two of them bad and run then', he admittedly candidly, speaking in a soft voice. "Gwan you hear miss. Tek time drive," he said, as he put his ticketing pad back in his pocket and bade her farewell. Reporting the surprising encounter to friends, the lady was told of an incident where a man climbed onto the female statue and pretended to suck one breast! Though this story was not corroborated, readers will also remember last year's incident involving a lady who disrobed and entered the fountain to pose as a third naked statue. |
