According to Quran and Sunnah

Bismillah ahRahman nirRaheem (In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

Hadith - Bukhari 4.250, Narrated Ibn Abbas
That he heard the Prophet saying, "It is not permissible for a man to be alone with a woman, and no lady should travel except with a Muhram (i.e. her husband or a person whom she cannot marry in any case forever; e.g. her father, brother, etc.)." Then a man got up and said, "O Allah's Apostle! I have enlisted in the army for such-and-such Ghazwa and my wife is proceeding for Hajj."  Allah's Apostle said, "Go, and perform the Hajj with your wife."

Hadith - Bukhari 4.242, Narrated Ibn 'Umar
The Prophet said, "If the people knew what I know about traveling alone, then nobody would travel alone at night."

Hadith - Muwatta 54.37 and Bukhari 2.194, Narrated AbuHuraira

[Ahmad, Muslim, Aboo Daawood, Ibn Maajah] Shaykh al-Albaanee declares it authentic in Saheehul-Jaami’ (no. 7651).
Malik related to me from Said ibn Abi Said al-Maqburi from Abu Hurayra that the Messenger of Allah said, "It is not halal for a woman who believes in Allah and the Last Day to travel the distance of a day and night without a man who is her mahram."

Hadith - Muslim #4725
On the authority of Abu Huraira that the Prophet said: Travelling is a tortuous experience.  It deprives a person of his sleep, his food and drink.  When one of you has accomplished his purpose, he should hasten his return to his family.

Hadith - Bukhari 8:182, Narrated Anas bin Malik
Allah's Apostle was on a journey and he had a black slave [servant] called Anjasha, and he was driving the camels (very fast, and there were women riding on those camels). Allah's Apostle said, "Waihaka (May Allah be merciful to you), O Anjasha! Drive slowly (the camels) with the glass vessels (women)!"

Hadith - Bukhari 8:230, Narrated Anas bin Malik
The Prophet had a Had (a camel driver) called Anjasha, and he had a nice voice. The Prophet said to him, "(Drive) slowly, O Anjasha! Do not break the glass vessels!" And Qatada said, "(By 'vessels') he meant the weak women."

Hadith - Muslim, Narrated Abu Huraira

Allah's Messenger said: Angels do not accompany the travellers who have with them a dog and a bell.

Seek Allah's Guidance before Traveling

Istikhara (Arabic) means to ask Allah to guide one to the right thing concerning any affair in one's life, especially when one has to choose between two permissible alternatives. A traveller should consult good righteous persons before setting out on a journey, because Allah says, "And consult them (O Prophet) in affairs (of moment)," (Qur'an 3.159) and one of the characteristics of the believers is that "they (conduct) their affairs by mutual consultation" (Qur'an 42.38).

Qatadah said, "Every people who seek the pleasure of Allah and consult with one another are guided to the best course in their affairs."

The traveller should also make istikharah and seek guidance from Allah. Sa' d ibn Waqas reported that the Prophet, peace be upon him, said, "Istikharah (seeking guidance from Allah) is one of the distinct favors (of Allah) upon man, and a good fortune for the son of Adam is to be pleased with the judgment of Allah. And a misfortune of the son of Adam is his failure to make istikharah (seeking Allah's guidance), and a misfortune for the son of Adam is his displeasure with the judgment of Allah." Ibn Taimiyyah said, "He who seeks guidance from the Creator and consults the creatures will never regret it."

Action Items for the Muttaqun:

  • Make the prayer of istikharah before deciding to embark.
  • Whenever possible, travel with a companion if you must travel long distances at night time, whether male or female.
  • Do not travel with a dog and a bell.
  • Muslimah's should not travel alone the distance of one day and one night.
  • Do not be slothful in returning home to be with your family after a long trip.
  • When travelling with women, provide comfort and ease for them, over speed and discomfort.

Remember... Allah, subhana watala, sees everything we do!
