COURSE LS 9 A is a
semester course that is required for graduation. DESCRIPTION:
It is a “whole language” course
that offers you a variety of
experiences
in reading, writing, speaking, listening and inquiry. It has several focuses: 1) improving the
quantity and quality of your personal reading; 2) improving you understanding
and effectiveness as a writer of by expository (essay) and narrative (story)
writing. Reading, writing assignments,
class activities provide practice and application of critical thinking for
school, career and life-long skills.
COURSE
For
successful completion of the course, students are
REQUIREMENTS: expected to participate and contribute to our
learning atmosphere; attend regularly and be on time and achieve a minimum of
60% of assignment assessments.
METHOD OF Grading
is based on a point system. Your marking period grade
GRADING: will be calculated by adding
your total accumulated points and dividing them by the total possible points. The table below will be used to change
percentages to grades:

Basis for the Final Grade: The final grade for
this class is based on 3 sections.
The final
exam will count for 20% of the final grade and each marking period will count for 40% of the final grade. You
must pass 2 out of 3 grades.
FEEDBACK: Assignments
are graded according to focused expectations.
Checklists, written comments, overhead models, self-reflections, and
class writing workshops provide for learning and skill improvement.
MAKE-UP Each
student is responsible for acquiring missed assignments.
WORK: Class
instruction time will not be used to explain absent work. Arrange to arrive early, stay after or
request a convenient time. No make up work is accepted for credit for
unexcused absences.
Work
from excused absences is due within the number of days missed.
Arrangements
for making up tests due to absences must be made within the week of the return
to school. Time outside of class is
usually required for test make-up.
Late work is
reduced by ½ for each day it is late.
EXTRA HELP: Arranged
before or after school.
EXTRA CREDIT: Extra credit is NOT a substitute for required work. Some assignments will be
designed as extra credit in addition to the
regularly assigned work.

CONSEQUENCES
Admission:
1. Upon entry to class, seat
yourself in your assigned seat and act in an appropriate manner.
2. Once the tardy bell has
rung, the class has started.
3. If you are late, you must
follow the current procedure for tardiness.
4. Class roll will be taken
from the seating chart. Any student out
of his/her assigned seat will be marked absent.
5. Only assigned students and
those with a valid pass may enter the room.
Supplies:
1. Students may only bring
schools supplies with them to class.
2. BE PREPARED – supplies,
including homework assignments are expected to be with you upon your arrival to
class. DO NOT ask for permission to get
your supplies. Such requests will be
denied. Your textbook, pen or pencil and notebook must be brought to class
daily. If you do not have your text, you
will lose one point for the day.
3. Being UNPREPARED for class
will have an effect on your grade.

Participation
This
includes: assignments, homework, group work, question and answer discussions.
Projects
This
includes: portfolios, notebooks, papers, and presentations.
Assessment
This
includes: quizzes, exams, finals, midterms, essays, and speeches.
1. All assignments are graded
on a point basis.
2. Assignments that are not
turned in on time will lose ½ of their point value for each day they are late.
3. You will have advance notice
before a test is given. Review sheets
will be given 2 days in advance.
Absenteeism:
1. If you are absent, you are
responsible for obtaining all the handouts, lecture/discussion notes and
assignments. You are responsible for
finding out what the assignment(s) was for the day(s) you are absent.
2. If you need materials from
me, you must do this either BEFORE or AFTER class or school. I will not distribute any materials during
class time.
3. In order to make-up any
missed work for credit, you must have an excused
absence. If you have an unexcused
absence, missed work may be obtained, however no credit will be issued. I will
issue make-up work and together we will negotiate a deadline to turn the work
in. KEEP IN MIND, you must adhere to the
deadline!
Tardiness:
1. If you come in late DO NOT
interrupt the class to obtain assignments, materials or handouts. Wait until the lecture, lesson or discussion
is completed and then pick up what you missed.
2. Please refer to the student
handbook for the consequences for tardiness.
Hall Passes:
1. No hall passes will be
issued except in emergencies. I will
determine if the situation is an emergency.

Expectations:
1. I insist
that you act in an appropriate manner for a young adult in High School.
2. I ask that
you respect my position as teacher.
3. Have all
needed materials at your desk, be seated when the bell rings, and be ready to
learn.
4. Respect
the people, equipment and furnishings of Room A102.
5. Listen to
what others have to say; if you have something to contribute, raise your hand.
6. Follow
directions the first time they are given.
7. Remain in
your seat unless you have permission to move.
8. I dismiss
our class, NOT the bell.
“The Consequences”
1st Time: The
teacher will talk to the student about it.
2nd
Time: The teacher will talk to
the student and parent about it and the student will endure a detention slip.
3rd Time: The student will receive a referral slip and dealt with by
administration.
STUDENTS: I have read this classroom contract;
understand what is expected of me.
Although I may or may not agree with it, I realize that our classroom
will run in this manner. These rules are
intended for my guidance and safety and I will honor it.
