COURSE  DESCRIPTION:LS 9 B is a semester course that is required for graduation.  It is a �whole language� course that offers you a variety of experiences in reading, writing, speaking, listening and inquiry.  It has several focuses: 1) improving the quantity and quality of your personal reading; 2) improving you understanding and effectiveness as a writer of by expository (essay) and narrative (story) writing.  Reading, writing assignments, class activities provide practice and application of critical thinking for school, career and life-long skills.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS:  For successful completion of the course, students are expected to participate and contribute to our learning atmosphere; attend regularly and be on time and achieve a minimum of 60% of assignment assessments. 

METHOD OF  GRADING: Grading is based on a point system.  Your marking period grade will be calculated by adding your total accumulated points and dividing them by the total possible points.  The table below will be used to change percentages to grades:

          A-    90-92
          B+    87-89
          B    83-86
          B-    80-82
          C+    77-79
          C    73-76
          C-    70-72
          D+    67-69
          D    63-66
          D-    60-62
          E      0-59

Basis for the Final Grade: The final grade for this class is based on 3 sections.   The final exam will count for 20% of the final grade and each marking period will count for 40% of the final grade.  You must pass 2 out of 3 grades.

FEEDBACK: Assignments are graded according to focused expectations.  Checklists, written comments, overhead models, self-reflections, and class writing workshops provide for learning and skill improvement.

MAKE-UP WORK: Each student is responsible for acquiring missed assignments.  Class instruction time will not be used to explain absent work.  Arrange to arrive early, stay after or request a convenient time.  No make up work is accepted for credit for unexcused absences.   Work from excused absences is due within the number of days missed.   Arrangements for making up tests due to absences must be made within the week of the return to school.  Time outside of class is usually required for test make-up. Late work is reduced by � for each day it is late.

EXTRA  HELP: Arranged before or after school.

EXTRA CREDIT: Extra credit is NOT a substitute for required work.  Some assignments will be designed as extra credit in addition to the regularly assigned work.

SPECIAL  MATERIALS: three ring binder (with dividers would be helpful) , a single subject spiral notebook , pens and notebook paper
