Do you, like myself, know in your heart that war, violence, destructive force are not the answer to the world's problems, but have wondered what the answer is? Here in the U.S. our administration's position seems to be that the best we can do in these dangerous times is to kill them on their soil, before they come over here and kill us on ours. Surely there must be a better way. Surely this could not be the plan of a loving God.
I believe another way is possible and that it all begins with our thinking and our beliefs. If we can first change our thinking - and most certainly our thinking about God - we will automatically change our attitudes, our words, our actions and ultimately our world. And so, please, read on�
Ever since the horrific happenings of September 11, 2001, we Americans have sung, prayed, declaimed, and adorned our vehicles, billboards and buildings with the words "God Bless America."
Frankly, I think we're falling short of the mark. History overflows with examples of human suffering wrought at the hands of people who believed that God was on "their side." Certainly this seems to be playing out again on all sides of the Iraq quagmire, recent terrorist strikes and the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian violence, to mention but a few of the worldwide conflicts that boil down to an "us vs. them" mentality.
I wanted - and suspected others would want - to make a slightly different statement but in similar language and for a similar "venue" that more clearly reflects the Loving God of ALL Humanity our American president invokes in his speeches. I wanted to put "into the mix" a gentle reminder of our Oneness with ALL human beings, EVERYWHERE.
As an actor who has for seven years played Ebenezer Scrooge in A Christmas Carol, I was not surprised when Tiny Tim whispered in my inner ear, "God bless us, EVERYONE." Ah! Of course.
