Merchant trader of Borgholm, On Oland, Sweden

*************
Claas, Arie Noot, 1999: He came from a long line of sea captains and merchant traders. He himself also sea captain and trader and at one time owner of two vessels and four warehouses. These warehouses were located at Bergholen on the island of Oland off the coast of Sweden, at Nordingen on the river Ems near Emden in Germany, on the island of Walcheren in Zeeland The Netherlands, and at Zierikzee on the island of Schouwen in The Netherlands. Living in Schouwen he called in Dutch Van Schouwen (of the island of Schouwen on which Zierikzee is situated). His house there was located between the Brie bridge and the hospital as recorded in an assessment roll of 1629. He was a minor when his father died in 1599 and was in 1603 under the guardianship of his maternal grandfather Jacob van der Goes of Walcheren and of Calmar in Sweden. Was with him engaged in the trade which took him often to the Dutch islands. He married a grand niece of his guardian. In 1624 he returned to Boda, probably to introduce his wife to his relatives there and to arrange the paternal inheritance with his brothers and sisters. Served as a soldier in the 30-years' war and wounded and captured at the battle of Mitten in Poland. Escaped and after miserable hardship and adventure reached home in Sweden. The Swedish record mention "badly wounded in the head". His wife died in 1631 when the war was at its height. Being ruined he sold his vessels and warehouses and sailed for America with his only son Pieter. They left Amsterdam 1 Oct 1636 and arrived in New Amsterdam 8 Mar 1637 according to the log of the ship Rensselaerwyck. He remained on Manhattan island as a contractor and was known as Claes Cornelissen van Schouen. Married again and had four children the oldest of which Pieterse who was baptized in the Dutch Reformed Church in New Amsterdam. He also mentioned as Claas Cornelissen alias the Meutelaer. Must have married another wife in New Netherlands of which several children are born and baptized in New York.

CORNELIS HENDRICK VAN NESS
Material researched and/or transcribed by Barbara L. Van Norsdall

Cornelis H. Van Ness was born about 1600 in the Netherlands. He lived in Vianen, on the Haverdijk, in South Holland during the year 1625. He married Maeyken Hendricks van den Burchgraeff. She was from the neighboring town of Leksmond and a daughter of Hendrick Adriansz van den Burchgraeff and Annetje Jans. The ancestors of Cornelis were from the nearby town of Noordeloos. Cornelis was a son of Hendrick Van Nes. He came to New Netherlands about 1641 with his wife and three children. He is mentioned in 1643 along with Andries de Vos and Cornelis Segers van Egmont as being the principal farmers of Rensselaerswyck colony, whose terms all other farmers must accept. During the year 1648, Cornelis, his wife and son-in-law Peter Claes (Wyckoff), had arguments with Director Brant Aertsz van Slichtenhorst of Rensselaerswyck. These arguments resulted in several law suits and Van Ness was forced to apologize for the slanderous language he used against the Director. Van Sllichtenhorst was arrested in 1652 for defying the authority of Director Stuyvesant and was sent back to Holland. Cornelis Van Ness rose to political power and general success after that. The above from "The descendants of Simon Van Ness and Hester DeLamater" By David M. Riker.

963. Maycke Hendrieux Van Der Burchgraeff was born about 1602 in Lavereld, , Zuid, Netherlands. She died before 1664 in Rensselaerswyck (Albany), NY. [Parents]
