Túrin's Story (in short)

Morwen and Húrin's son was Túrin. After the Nirnaeth Arnoediad, when Túrin was just eight years old, Morwen had feared that Túrin would be taken from her by the Easterlings. So in secret, Morwen begged King Thingol of Doriath to raise Túrin in his realm. In the autumn of the Year of Lamentation, she sent Túrin with two aged servants to Doriath. In the first beginning of the next year, Morwen gave birth to Nienor, Túrin's sister. After many perils, Túrin and his companions reached Doriath, and then were found by Beleg Cúthalion(Strongbow), the chief of the marchwardens of Thingol. Then Thingol took in Túrin and for nine years Túrin grew strong and dwelt with Thingol in his halls. Then Túrin was filled with fear for his mother and sister, and went before Thingol to ask for mail and sword, and went out to battle with his friend and companion, Beleg. After three years, Túrin returned to Doriath, and Saeros, who long begrudged Túrin, waylaid Túrin as he set out from Doriath. But Túrin overcame him, and made him flee through the woods. And Saeros fleeing in terror fell into a stream, and his body was broken on a rock; and Túrin then deemed himself an outlaw, and ran away from Doriath. But the King pardoned Túrin, and Beleg departed from Doriath and sought for tidings of Túrin through many perils.

But Túrin lived among the outlaws, and became their captain, and when a year had passed, Beleg came to where they lived by night. At that time Túrin was gone, and the outlaws took Beleg and bound him and treated him cruelly. But Túrin returned and saw what was done, and he released Beleg, and they renewed their friendship. Beleg then told Túrin of Thingol's pardon, and tried to persuade him to return to Doriath. But Túrin refused the pardon of the King, and he urged Beleg to remain with him, but Beleg would not do so. The next day Beleg parted and returned to Doriath. Thingol then gave Beleg leave, and gave him the black sword Anglachel as a parting gift, and Beleg departed from Doriath.

After Beleg left, Túrin and his outlaws went to Amon Rûdh, where Mîm and the other Petty-Dwarves lived. Then Beleg returned again to Túrin, and he brought him the Dragon-Helm of Dor-lómin. But Túrin still would not return to Doriath, so Beleg stayed with him and did not depart. Then orcs came upon Amon Rûdh, and many of Túrin's companions were slain in the night. Then when all was silent, Mîm the Petty-Dwarf, with hatred long-stored, stepped up to Beleg and drew forth the Anglachel. But Beleg stood up and took back the sword and thrust it at the Dwarf, and Mîm fled from the hill-top. Beleg then searched among the dead for Túrin, but did not find him, and he knew he was not dead, but taken to Angband. So Beleg departed, and looked for Túrin. In his journey he met Gwindor, an elf of Nargothrond, and with him he found an Orc encampment in Thangorodrim. Beleg took his bow and shot the orcs, and he found Túrin there, tied to a tree and sleeping. Beleg then cut his bonds and carried him out of the dell. He laid him down, and drew his sword Anglachel and cut the bonds on Túrin's ankles. But the blade slipped as he cut them, and Túrin's foot was pricked. Then Túrin was aroused with a sudden rage, and seeing someone bending over him with a blade, he leapt up, and seized Anglachel, and slew Beleg thinking that he was an orc. But there came a flash of lightning, and he looked down on Beleg's face. Túrin stood silent, and knew at last what he had done.

And so Túrin and Gwindor went to Nargothrond, where he became great friends with Orodreth. Finduilas, the daughter of Orodreth, who loved Gwindor, now turned from Gwindor and loved Túrin instead. Then Morgoth the enemy loosed upon the people a great host, among them Glaurung the father of the dragons. And so the great host of Morgoth ransacked Nargothrond, and many were burned and slain, and the rest fleed until at last Túrin stood alone. At that moment Glaurung came and spoke to Túrin, and he fell under the spell of Glaurung, and did not stir. Then the Orcs drove away the captives and among them was Finduilas, and she cried out to Túrin, but he still did not stir. And when she left, Glaurung withdrew his glance, and Túrin stirred slowly, and then Túrin, drawing back his sword, stabbed at the Dragon's eyes. Túrin then hastened, searching for his mother Morwen and his sister, until at last he came to Dor-lómin. And he looked for Morwen and Nienor and asked the Easterlings where they were. And then the last of the spell of Glaurung was loosed, and Túrin slew Brodda the Easterling in his hall. Then he sought in vain for Finduilas, and in the forest of Brethil he found Finduilas, slain by her orc captives.

And so Glaurung headed east, and Nienor got thrown from her steed and went to Amon Ethir. But looking westward she stared into the eyes of Glaurung, who laid a spell of darkness and forgetfullness on her, and she could not remember anything; not even her own name. And Glaurung left her there, and flew to Nargothrond. Then Nienor escaped, and she fled in madness into the wood, and eventually fell asleep. There Túrin found her and asked who she was, for he knew not that she was his sister Nienor. But Nienor couldn't answer him, for she lost her memory, and so Túrin named her "Níniel". The next day they came to Dimrost, and there Brandir healed Nienor of her sickness, and Brandir loved her, but her love was only given to Túrin. And Túrin fell in love with Níniel also, and asked her in marriage, and three years later they were married in Brethil. But Glaurung heard that Túrin was in Brethil, and so Túrin asked for companions to go against Glaurung. So Túrin departed from Níniel with two other companions, and came to Nen Girith at sundown. There layed Glaurung on the shores of the river Teiglin, and one of Túrin's companions drew back to the woods in shame. But Túrin and his other companion, Hunthor, crossed over the river, and in the middle of the night Glaurung woke, and Hunthor was killed by a great stone that had fallen. Then Túrin climbed up the cliff alone, and came beneath Glaurung. And he drew the Anglachel and with all his strength thrust it into the belly of the Dragon. Glaurung screamed, and then hurled himself across the chasm, and lay still. And Túrin went over to the Dragon, and then took up his sword.

Then Níniel came to the Nen Girith, and saw the Dragon lying, and Glaurung said at last to Níniel, "Hail Nienor, daughter of Húrin. I give thee joy that thou hast found thy brother at last." And so Glaurung died, and looking upon Túrin Nienor said, "A Túrin Turambar turun ambartanen: master of doom by doom mastered." Then she ran and she cast herself over, and was lost in the wild water. Túrin then came, and found out Níniel was dead, and that she was truly Nienor, his sister. So he fled, and came to where Nienor had cast herself in the waters, and drew out Anglachel, and asked it to slay him swiftly. Then Túrin set the hilt of the sword on the ground, and cast himself upon the point of Anglachel, and the blade took his life.
