Elvis Birthday Dance, Prestwick Airport, Scotland
Saturday, 12th January 2002
The Elvis Touch enjoyed a celebration of what would have been Elvis's 67th
Birthday with our 7th Annual Birthday Dance at Prestwick Airport, Scotland.
The only visit Elvis ever made to Great Britain was to Prestwick.
A full coach left George Square in the centre of Glasgow. The tape
on the bus didn't work, so Gerry gave us a wee song to start us off. An
hour later we arrived at Prestwick and the Glesga crowd filled up the Graceland
bar (in the main concourse of the airport) in no time, and some of us got
our photo taken for the local paper.
A UK television station, Channel 5, came up to film the dance for a programme
called "Exclusive" which aired at 7 pm on Monday 14th January. And
not an impersonator or look-alike to be seen.
The dance was a sell-out, as always, with many fans attending from Glasgow,
Edinburgh, Paisley and Ayr - and the dancefloor filled up as soon as the
music started! Paul and Harry DJ'd all evening and played everything
we wanted to hear. The highlight of the evening was the Dirty Dancing
Competition, where 10 couples danced to "Let Yourself Go". Hard job
for the judges to decide on a winner!
There were many raffle prizes (booze and Elvis stuff), but THE big prize
of the evening was a framed TTWII Special Edition poster which was
raffled seperately for the Elvis Presley Trauma Center in Memphis. This
raised over £100 for the Trauma Center, and many thanks once again to
Isabelle Jarvis for her generosity in donating this. Paul
Sayers (the Branch Leader of the Edinburgh Memphis Mafia Club) was the lucky
winner.
Dance finished at 1am with "If I Can Dream", and so ended another memorable Elvis Dance. And not too long to wait until the next dance in Glasgow on 25th January (Burns Night).
