| The Elvis Presley Film Society was established in Glasgow in 1995. The aim of the Film Society is to present the life and career of Elvis Presley through the medium of filmed record, for the purpose of discussing, in a positive manner, the pros and cons of specific times in his professional career. | |||||||||||||||||||||
| The structure of each meeting includes the screening of a chosen subject (feature film, Television Special, In Concert Performance, Television guest appearance) in 16mm, 8mm or video - occasionally in mixed format. The screening is generally followed by the distribution of a comment sheet, with which those in attendance can offer their views on the selected subject. A short, informal discussion then takes place, which concludes the meeting. | |||||||||||||||||||||
| Upon entry to each meeting, an informative hand-out is issued to everyone for the evening's programme. On display are many original and custom-made, Society-designed posters and memorabilia relevant to the programme. Background audio is provided during breaks - often including outtakes and/or relevant interview material. | |||||||||||||||||||||
| In 1996, the Film Society began a Restoration Preservation Programme whereby original posters, as and when acquired, are restored to the best possible condition - given their age. Some of this material is then encapsulated in a strong laminate material - ensuring a protective display format and, more importantly, no possibility of further deterioration. Remember, a great deal of this material is in excess of forty years old. | |||||||||||||||||||||
| Invitations were extended for exhibitions of Film Society display materials on two occasions during 1999 at Collectors Fairs, and both were very well received. | |||||||||||||||||||||
| In 1997, the Film Society was given official approval by the Elvis Presley Estate in Memphis. Since that time, the Film Society has enjoyed fairly regular communication with the Estate. It would appear that the Film Society in Glasgow is the only such Society in existence. | |||||||||||||||||||||
| Film Society meetings have a very relaxed, informal atmosphere, where interested parties can get together and enjoy a viewing experience with the opportunity for discussion afterwards. There is no funding whatsoever, other than entry fees at meetings, and we have no form of sponsorship. We would be pleased to hear from any potential sponsors and can guarantee promotion and advertising within our magazine reports. Despite our present lack of sponsorship, we will strive to maintain and hopefully build on our current structure. | |||||||||||||||||||||
