While photojournalism is an important part of my work I regard my picture-taking more as documentary photography.  And while there are times that I will ask the subject(s) to pose for a particular scenario I actually prefer a more candid but consentual approach when photographing an event.  Or when capturing a subject.  Not unlike my ongoing series Men At Work when photographing police scenarios I prefer to 'document' the subjects in action.  Or, perhaps, at rest.

In most cases the subjects are aware of my presence, at such events, and before snapping a picture or a series of pictures of a particular subject ... if I sense that the subject does not wish to be photographed, by me, I'll turn the camera away and move onto my next subject or scenario.   In any case, I prefer that subjects not pose nor adjust their position or stand but, and as I will often suggest
'pretend that I'm not here'.

Not unlike when I capture
RollingThunder or cops on duty at protests 'consentual but candid' is an approach that I employ during National Police Week.  And in a similar way that I will document Cops on Duty, it has always been my practice to visit the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial many times, throughout the year.  And, in some cases publish articles pertaining to events that occur at the Memorial, including photoessays of police funerals.

While documenting and sometimes reporting on historic events of our times, my hope, is to capture moments in time that can not ever be again.  And, in the process, shed light on my personal story.
