A 'Hand Works' Photographic Essay by Elvert Xavier Barnes Photography
Joe would eulogize that when Big Mama was born more than one hundred years before in January 1893 that it was a much different world than what it had become in 1998.   Traveling was still mostly by horse back.  The Emancipation Proclamation had only been issued a little more than 30 years before.  Automobiles had yet to be invented and the telephone was not yet in use.  And one would not be installed in their home until the late 60's.  Nor would a TV.  Much of the world as we knew it in 1998 did not exist for much of her life.  And what did exist was not accessable to her.  When the 100 acre farm and orchard that they had purchased in ? was sold to the Cappers a bathroom would then be added to the left side of the house.  She and Walter had worked the fields until 2 years before his passing in March 1971.  Elvert Xavier Barnes Photography
