| It was freezing cold. After taking a few pictures of the anti-corporate media protest at the Today Show I'd walk over to the Murray Hill area and visit the NYC Inymedia which located on 32nd just off Madison was not too far from where Frank, Steve and I once shared a loft in Gramcery Park at 22 E 22d Street between Park Avenue and Broadway. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| I'd walk down Park Avenue to 22nd and turn right. And while holding back tears I'd reflect on the time when Frank, Steve and I shared the entire second floor at 22 East 22nd. My bedroom was in the front to the right of the living room. Theirs was in the back to the left of the bathroom. A kitchen, a dining room and a hallway was in between. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| Shortly after I'd relocate back to WDC in February 1982 Frank and Steve, in the spring of 1982 would purchase a condo in the Madison Green which was then a newly constructed high-rise at the corner Broadway and 22nd Street (picture #5) and located just across the street from the Flat Iron Building which is situated between 22nd and 23rd Street and 5th Avenue and Broadway. Buildings to the left and more north are often associated with the Toy District. Left of 5th Avenue is Chelsea. Right of 5th from 20th to 28th Street over to Park Avenue is more often associated with Gramery Park. After snapping a shot of the Empire State building at Broadway and 22nd I'd walk one block north to 23rd and head west in the direction of Chelsea which along the way at 27 on 23rd I'd pass Robert Mapplethorpe's former loft which is where in November '86 we'd shoot the March 87 Black Party image. In the picture depicting the Empire State building the low-rise building in the forefront on the left at one time was a toy manufacturer. The top floor, a loft, was occupied for many years by a reknown architectural interior designer and antique collector that had one of the rearest collections in the world of American architectural artifacts and industrial relicts. Though I had always had an interest in architectural and industrial themes it was my relationships with designers, architects, and collectors in NYC during the 80's that shaped my focus in architectural and industriual photography. |
