The Cottage of Lost Play.
A day after journeying as Eriol usually would. Eriol came to a house i the island. It was homely and and the air and breeze near it was refreshing and good. In his heart he knew that it held secrets and stories. Eriol was curiose to see who dwelt within its walls. He was let in and the home was filled with many. The owners offered to let him stay for as long as he liked. Eriol told stories of his adventures and each night was told of the secrets of the Cottage. He met Rumil and Rumil told him the history of the island and the cottage of lost play. The Book of lost tales is of Rumil telling Eriol about the history of the earth.
First there was Iluvatar. Iluvatar had created the earth and it's first beings. He created the ainur and taught them the great music. One of the Ainur( also refered to as gods), Melko, the most powerful of the Ainur lusted for the knowlegde and powers of Iluvatar(Ilu). His music became dark and threatening. This caused confusion amoungst the Ainur. Iluvatar then told the Ainur to go into the world and form it. Melko became even more evil and twisted than before. He lusted for the light and distrupted many wonderful things. The Gods used there music and powers to form many beings and parts of nature. Together with their powers joint, they formed a tree that poured out light and then later another. They chained Melko for his evil doings but later released him. Elves were sent into middle earth on the other side of the great sea but they still loved the sea and one day wished to return to the Havens. The Ainur created three gems of pearl that within them held light and power.
While all the Ainur were at a festival, Melko killed some elves and stole the gems. He destroying the two trees as well. Melko escaped and then dwelt for the rest of the book alone or with evil spirits. The Ainur spent many a year trying to revive Laurelin the tree. When they finaly revive it, they make a sun ship out of her fruit and the hair of Vana. Then they make a moon ship. |
