| The Dana 44 has become the staple of most off road Jeeps. With a wide selection of gear ratios and applications, it is fairly easiely adapted into anything you want. here are SOME of the variations of the front d-44... a) 76-79 waggie/cherokee b) 80-91 waggie/cherokee c) 74-83 chevy 1/2 & 3/4 ton d) 75-89 dodge 1/2 ton e) 76-80 scout f) 75-83 ford 1/2 &3/4 ton I have only listed a few of the most popular swaps, and I tried to only include axles with disk brakes. a) The early waggie axles offer a good start for a jeep d-44. they are about 63" wide, passenger side drop, and have 6* caster built into them. The axle tubes are plenty thick and the shafts are 31 spline 1.31" all the way out. these are 6 lug axles and they are very similar to chevy 44's of the same era. The Cherokee axles are the same, but 6" wider. These axles are SUA b) The Later Jeep 44's have a drivers side drop making them a good swap for wranglers. The bad??? well.. they usually have horrid gears(2.72!). It is important to watch for the vacuum disconnect d-44 and AVOID IT at all costs..try to find one with locking hubs. They are also SUA c)The Chevy d-44's have 6* caster, nice thick axle tubes, 1.31" shafts all the way out, and are 6 lug for 1/2 ton, 8 lug for 3/4 ton. These axles are very similar to the GM 10 bolt, but are more desireable because of parts availability. these axles are spring over axle (SOA)already. d) The dodge 1/2 ton 44 is essentially the same as a Chevy. e) |
