Almost twenty years ago I took a serious interest in trying to identify the performers on those old American LP records of the ROYALE (et al.) labels, a good many of which I had found in a second hand record shop in Hamburg/Germany. These records were different from those I had seen thus far, not just the design of the sleeves, but the names of the performers in particular, of which I had never heard before either - not to speak of the pressing quality which "impressed" me quite a bit when I came home from my trip and put the first of these records on the turntable . . . However, my interest grew with every listen and I started a very busy phase of research. After some time I was able to present to interested fellow collectors the very first results of my research in a modest piece for the ARSC Journal. A follow-up piece with more substantial information and an extended list of identified recordings appeared a few years later, again written for the ARSC Journal. On this site I present both articles in combined and revised form, adding also a few more identifed performances. Furthermore, I present a selection of Royale's amazing sleeve designs without commenting on any of them.
