Managing EYL: Minimizing Risks, Optimizing Benefits
Adi Sutrisno
Teaching
English to Young Learners (TEYL) can be either beneficial or detrimental to
learners, depending on what is given; who is giving; and how it is approached.
It can be beneficial if handled appropriately, as young learners are curious
about learning and easily shaped. Yet, it can be detrimental as well,
especially if it is not managed carefully. This paper endeavors
to identify some possible risks and benefits young learners might have as
the result of a certain learning process benefits so that the teaching and
learning process will be more beneficial than detrimental to learners. At the
heart of this is my argument, contending that managing EYL teaching is of
paramount importance in our attempts to minimize risks and to optimise benefits
to learners.
