What is the Influence of Parents’ Education and Involvement on Young Learners’ English Achievement?

Margaretha Dinar Sitinjak

This paper discusses the findings of how parents’ education and involvement influenced young learners’ English achievement. On one hand, educated parents give more attention to their children in learning than the uneducated ones do. They know how to help their children learn. On the other hand, parents involvement in helping young learners learn English refers to when parents participate, cooperate and collaborate with schools. It also describes the benefits of parents’ involvement in helping children learn English. The research was conducted in two elementary schools (SD YSP PUSRI and SDN 43 KERTAPATI) in Palembang. The findings showed that there was a positive and strong correlation between parents’ education and young learners’ English achievement. However, there was a negative correlation between parents’ involvement and young learners’ English achievement. Moreover, the correlation showed that fathers’ education was higher than mothers’ education.
