The Value of Using Story in Teaching English to Young
Learners in Indonesia
Saharudin
Since a long time ago, traditional
story has been very effective among Indonesia to transfer knowledge, to
teach or to entertain specially to children. Takes this traditional practice to
teaching and learning process to young learners, it could be very interesting
for some reasons. Wells (1986) says that stories surround the infant from the
moment of birth. Even before they cannot talk, the infant begins to construct a
mental model of their world based on their experience. Geake
and Rabun (1994) state that children learn through
participation. Utilizing this to the statement proposed by Holt 1983
that babies and young children like to her adult conversation, telling
story will be very useful to make young learners involve and participate. So,
if we want to help little children as they learn to talk, one way to do is by
talking to them. We do it naturally and unaffectedly and by letting them around
when we talk to them. This paper will discus the value of story in young
language learners, criteria and strategy of teaching by using story, and
rationale and the implementation of story telling to teach young learners in
Indonesia.
