The implementation of competency-based curriculum leads to the adoption of communicative language teaching which goals is to develop learners’ communicative competence not only for the adult learners but also for the young learners. However, curriculum is not the only factor to consider since teachers also play an important role in ensuring the success of implementing communicative language teaching. Teachers’ understanding and readiness to apply the principles of CLT become very crucial. A study on some teachers teaching young children in Semarang reveals teachers’ understanding about CLT and their perception about the potential difficulties in applying CLT.
