Designing Appropriate Curriculum and Selecting
Applicable Materials for young Learners:
Achmad Riwayadi
This paper highlights the
importance of a well-set up curriculum and carefully-selected materials for the
success of young learners in learning English. It elucidates our experience
since 1992 in designing and developing curriculum and selecting materials for
800-1000 elementary school-age children who vary in ethnic groups and
backgrounds. Appropriately designed curriculum has spotlighted new insights in
teaching – learning process, granted positive inputs to teachers and allowed
them to formulate some betterment for both teachers and learners. Well-chosen
materials also give teachers more flexibility and choices in determining
suitable methodologies and proper approaches to ameliorate learners’
achievement and at the same time make them become more motivated and
enthusiastic in learning. This experience is very beneficial for both
experienced and inexperienced teacher who are concerned with Teaching English
to Young Learners and will certainly give new spectacles and challenges to
curriculum designers and policy makers.
